Mr. Run and Jump

Overall, Mr. Run and Jump is a colorful, tricky platformer that will get your heart racing. If you relish the challenge of replaying levels until you get them right, or collecting everything in sight, you’ll get a kick (and a run and a jump) out of this one.

I’m not going to lie: this game drove me up and down the wall frequently with how hard it was. I was howling at times at the devilish stage designs, a pain matched only by the sheer relief of finally pulling them off. The controls here are spot on, so it really is about your ability to do what each set-up is asking of you. Because of that, and my own stubborn nature, I found myself unable to walk away from the game for very long even when things got ridiculous. Again, you really have to enjoy this kind of cruel platformer to get anything out of Mr. Run and Jump, but if that’s your flavor of choice, this is a very well made one.

Mr. Run and Jump may look unassuming on the surface, but the challenges that await will have you screaming in frustration until they have you shouting in triumph. Though the trial-and-error style of each difficult room sometimes wore on me, after each success, I couldn’t wait to see what hurdles I needed to clear next.

Mr. Run and Jump lacks originality for being a masterpiece of the genre. Even with this premise, we are dealing with a game that is thoroughly enjoyable, challenging, and graced by a not-so-bold but effective and well-constructed level design.

Mr. Run and Jump gives a feeling of pure unadulterated gaming joy like no other when your co-ordination and the sharp controls combine.

Mr. Run and Jump gives players looking for a pure platforming challenge a real test of their skill. Its incrementally difficult levels that join a thousand deadly features to a thousand deadly enemies will require the sharpest and most responsive trial-and-error responses from anyone who dares to take it on. So much so that even with its assistance features, Mr. Run and Jump will leave out players less keen on such extreme challenges.

For speedrunners on the more masochistic side there’s undoubtedly a lot to get your teeth into here though. For everyone else we’d recommend a more rewarding and streamlined hardcore 2D platformer.
