A shooter, where you create your own guns. It pulses with energy but doesn’t fully use its potential. The game often unnecessarily jumps from dynamic combat to a chaotic fight against a dumb but extremely powerful AI. Instead including roguelike elements, the authors should have gone with multiplayer. [Issue#288]

The action is fast, spectacular and satisfying, but also short (especially for a roguelike), because I finished the campaign in around six hours and was left with a bland challenge mode. [10/2018, p.87]

While the core mechanics of Mothergunship are awesome (gunplay, shooting, level design, pace in battle) and the performance is great -both technically and visually- the game suffers from its “rng” nature, making the whole “big gun crafting” trivial and tiresome. It should have invested more in actual gameplay with those hard-earned guns and not in the process of creating them each and every single time for every level. Τhe randomness of many gameplay elements fluctuates the derived fun.

This game is immediately overwhelming and punishing (in the second mission already). Or maybe I just ****, who knows. Besides that, the weapon crafting system (a crucial part of the game) is never explained. Hence the player is left wondering what X does and where Y goes - resulting in being under-powered and dying. You could experiment, of course... save for the fact that when you die, you LOSE all of the weapon parts you used. That strongly discourages experimentation, so it goes against the game own focus.

A very fun game concept with a truly unique gimmick of creating your own guns. The gameplay is fun itself being a mix of FPS and Bullet Hell genres. Really good sound design and matching soundtrack. Good voice acting and actually funny dialogues between the characters. There were only 2 downsides for me: 1) the setting wears out even before the main campaign is finished (spoilers, there's a lot more after it plot wise). Even though there are various environments, it's still all techno-alien-ship-ish with robots being the same. Had the game other bioms it would be more fun, as well as live enemies with blood and gore. 2) experience is presented by pickup items that disappear after a short span of time. One can easily make no exp in the heat of a big fight if it's a huge room, for example. And after level 10 or so the progression goes really slow. The lack of multiplier is indeed a lost opportunity, but not such a big deal for me personally

Fun, 7/10, untill you finish main story. After that the balance jumps out of the window and unless you are lucky with RNG or have above average FPS skill, then you'll be constantly obliterated in infinitely scalling missions. And that happens almost immidiately after campaign. Needless to say my "fun" part dropped like a rock in a well. Other than that.. As much fun shooting is and weapon-crafting, it could really use some upgrading. Especially part-tiers, how often shop shows up and how many coins you get.

MOTHERGUNSHIP is a ton of fun. When you’ve built a lava-spewing dual minigun with a rocket launcher shooting ricocheting explosives in the middle of your 40th jump since touching the ground- and that’s only on one of your arms- it’s pretty hard not to smile. The game nails its tone, full of color, speed, and humor, and it doesn’t let off the gas pedal from start to finish. It’s not a perfect game, but it does what it needs to do, and I’d have an easy time recommending it to most.

A successful mix of bullet hell, crafting and FPS with old school charm, but little variety.

Mothergunship is a great game that has all of the good aspects of Doom, meaning it is fast paced. While also, between the slaughtering of enemies mind you, having some great comedy. Along with that it is also a pleasure to play on lower end systems and could most likely run on RECENT intel integrated Graphics.

When Mothergunship is firing on all cylinders, it's a satisfying and thrilling shooter where it really counts. With an incredibly fun and never uninteresting gun-crafting mechanic, it certainly goes a long way with its clever hook and an endless flow of enemies to gun down.

Mothergunship is a very interesting game, with a frenetic bullet-hell FPS gameplay, although it ends up feeling a little bit repetitive and empty.

Mothergunship has some interesting ideas and unique gameplay mechanics, but it doesn't deliver as enjoyable of an experience as it may seem on paper. The gunplay is lackluster, weapon crafting isn't as extensive as you might hope, and the roguelike design elements mostly work against the game.

However fun it might look, some core parts of the game feel forgotten, abandoned or ignored. It's such a great concept and that makes it so sad it didn't even feel like a diamond in the rough.

SummaryMOTHERGUNSHIP mixes bullet-hell intensity with the shooting, customization, and traversal of the first-person genre. Fight your way through the alien fleets, facing randomized enemy and level mayhem as you clear rooms and take out some of the biggest bosses seen in the FPS genre.
