Lunacid is the new gold standard for an indie homage. Kira shows how intimately familiar they are with the RPG legacy of FromSoftware by picking out what worked best in their classic dungeon crawlers and incorporating the strongest elements of their modern action RPGs. Despite how referential the game feels at times, it still manages to establish its own identity through the metanarrative and inclusion of horror elements. If you’ve never experienced FromSoftware’s first-person RPGs, Lunacid is a great starting point.

Lunacid felt like a revalation of what sort of games we could receive if developers opted to borrow from more than just Dark Souls, by looking back at some of From Software's earlier titles. It's proof that games like King's Field can and should be lauded just as much as the games that came after; and, indeed, that these esoteric experiences still have a place in today's gaming landscape. Lunacid was one of my best surprises of the year, and it gives me hope that others might follow in its footsteps. While not without its faults, Lunacid is an RPG well worth setting aside time for.

Lunacid is certainly an intriguing action RPG with plenty of old-school charm, but audiences more used to modern games might find some of its quirks – and its balance that heavily favors magic builds – a bit annoying.

On the one hand, Lunacid is riddled with outdated design, a deliberately crude retro aesthetic, and traps that often feel unfair. On the other hand, it offers a deeply unique experience that masterfully captures the essence of classic dungeon ARPGs from decades past and evokes the enigmatic charm of early FromSoftware titles. It's a game that thrives on its imperfections, delivering a nostalgic yet fresh take on a genre that feels like a lost relic rediscovered.

Good game. It's a KingsField-like (King's Field being the FromSoft series that inspired the Souls / Bloodborne / Elden Ring games). Also, PSA: the developer added "pronouns" to the character select screen that affect nothing, and have nothing to do with the game. It was literally added as a troll to whiners who are triggered by anything remotely LGBTQ-friendly. So if you explode into a rage over the fact that you can create a character who claims to "identify as an attack helicopter", not for you I guess.

Astonishing aesthetics, awesome level design, good variety in weapons, spells, even strategies to proceed, and very atmospheric **** put in a nutshell best indie game of the year to me.

Wonderful game. Captures the horror side of dungeon crawlers really well, something that the kings field/shadow tower series and only a scarce few other games have achieved. The music for this game that isn't made by Kira is very distracting and hurts the atmosphere of the game pretty badly, but that's my only complaint.
