Look Outside
One of the best survival horror games of the year and an impressively disturbing mix of EarthBound and The Thing, that also happens to be one of the best bargains of 2025.
Look Outside is an extremely original project and gameplay-rich masterpiece created in just half a year. The game offers deep narrative, a great variety of actions and possibilities, a multitude of endings, and much more. It is capable of delivering many indescribable emotions that are worth experiencing for yourself.
Look Outside is a wonderfully eerie adventure with some of the most unique scenarios and sights I’ve seen in a horror game in years. While it makes a strong first impression, though, as time went on, I sometimes wondered if I’d be better off just looking outside. However, there are still enough strong moments to make it worth checking out for those who love horror games and RPGs.

I thought this game looked interesting and knew I'd like it but it seriously surpassed my expectations. If it looks even remotely interesting to you, I would strongly recommend you to grab it. I love the premise in this game, I find it's such a powerful hook. What's happening outside? Why can't you look? It leaves so many questions unanswered and that's exactly the kind of things that makes me want to keep going and find out. It's a survival horror old-school RPG, reminiscent of earthbound and the likes. The more grotesque body horror reminded me of LiSA which I also really like. It has the typical turned-based combat system but it's surprisingly well-designed. It requires you to think about what you're doing each battle (instead of just spamming 'Attack') and has some pretty tough challenges. The game progresses in a sequence of 15 days as you explore your apartment complex. As you - and time - progresses, more doors and paths open up. Some of them even change over time. The gameplay loop works very well in that you need to come back to your own room every now and then. It does a great job at pacing, especially in a horror game. You see a new path or enemies that look pretty strong and it's late, so you go back home to rest and prepare. Knowing exactly where you want to explore on the next day... Or maybe you just want to cook up some food, re-arrange your party, play some video-games, then get back to it! There are a lot of events that are a bit more random, where you need to make choices that may be in your favour or not. They don't feel obvious or predetermined... A situation that looks bad may actually be good and a situation that looks harmless might actually be a trap. The unpredictable nature of it all makes for a very fun and exciting experience. It's easy to miss out on a lot of unique things in the game. But it only makes it that much more replayable, it's usually cool things but nothing that will ruin the game or make it impossible to finish. I did find that there is sometimes such an overwhelming amount of places to go and things to do (especially with the content added in 2.0 onward) that it's easy to get lost or waste time. There are quite a few endings, most of which can be done in a single save file. I really enjoyed each of them and was happy to see there isn't very much overlap between each of them. I found that different endings often gave you different parts of the answer rather than the same answer in a different way... Which makes it really worth going after more than one ending if you're curious to have a better understanding of the story! I honestly had to stop every now and then to think about the fact that this was actually made with RPG Maker. They did such amazing job at giving it its own identity, it doesn't have that typical "stock" RPG Maker feel that often make those types of games feel cheap. I felt like I was playing a long-forgotten SNES game. I know it sounds really cliché but it really made me feel exactly like back in the early 2000s, when I'd play random SNES games I had never heard of on an emulator. It really captures that essence.I was also super happy to hear creator Francis Coulombe is from the same piece of earth as I am. Seeing characters with Québécois names and all the little references in monsters, gear etc. always made me smile. Really appreciate seeing a bit of self-insertion and representation in games! The value is absolutely insane for the amount of content you get. I was really surprised to hear that the game was made in less than a year. And a year later, they're still adding quite a bit of content. Just really shows that RPG Maker can absolutely still pump out great games when put in the right hands. Wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who likes horror and old-school RPGs!

The vast majority of the game's shortcomings came down to glitches that can both end up fixed by the time I finish this sentence, and didn't ruin the experience too much anyway. Possibly the worst part is knowing that there are so many vagaries in the game that you start to wonder if those "glitches" are intentional. It's a heck of a game, a darn good horror game, and one twisted, fantastic experience. So get out of the apartment, make friends with some Lovecraftian monsters, and don't forget to look outside.

Look Outside is one of the most interesting projects I've played in 2025 so far, and I believe it will find a legion of fans over time. With the surprise release, a good portion of the public will still have a way to go to get to the game, but the project is so solid, different, creative, and thought-provoking that I doubt word of mouth won't have its effect. I really had a scary, impactful, and fun time playing this title, and I hope it won't be long before we see more from Francis Coulombe, a name to keep an eye on in the coming years.

When I saw that Coulombe was involved in the cult classic, Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, I knew I was in for a ride simply by association. But I wasn’t fully prepared for the depths of creative madness I was gazing into with Look Outside. Each step was full of dread and morbid glee, as I never knew what to expect, was terrified of what could happen, but absolutely refused to miss a thing. I would’ve liked a little more balance when it came to getting mauled by random enemy encounters, and controller support was a little weird, but any frustration I felt from a momentum-halting game over melted away when the next stop on this roller coaster of suffering came into view. Frankly, I was bummed to get off when the ride was over.

With an awesome setting and artwork, interesting characters, and a spooky yet intriguing story, I really enjoyed Look Outside and look forward to playing it again to check out other endings. It’s got a lot of charm, and I love the setting. If you’re interested in the story, and you don’t really want to play a survival horror RPG with an emphasis on resource management, the game also offers an easier mode that takes away a lot of the stress. Just make sure if you play, you check out what’s outside the window. You’ll see something beautiful!

Look Outside is truly exceptional in places, is full of creepy character and mostly juggles multiple plates with success. It’s wild just how much missing some basic features slowly drags it underwater.

Look Outside is a moody horror RPG that is greater than the sum of its parts. Despite having a frustrating level design at times, a lack of map and being a little too breezy, what’s forefront and centre is the vibes and setting. Francis Coulombe nails this, providing richly detailed pixel art that depicts grotesque beasties and monsters. Amalgams are made of teeth and limbs. Guys with eye clusters poring out of their torso. The designs are the whole nine yards. It’s also a quality little bite-sized RPG with lots of charming systems and tidbits to flesh out the experience. Just, whatever you do, do not think too hard about the flesh monster that is knocking at your door. I promise all is OK.

Wow Okay so i'll get it out there: the story and world of this game is IMPECCABLE The art style is a beauty The area designs and atmospheres are creepy and interesting The characters are really human and funny, even when sometimes they aren't human anymore And the way it handles the moral dilemmas of apocalypse with EMPATHY is just beautiful That's what makes this world so beautiful to me. The empathy behind it. Even as the world burns, there is room for love and **** writing of the game is masterful. The dialogues, jokes, descriptions, characters, the world as a whole is an artistic and literary beauty. Yeah. I love the game, and its story will stick with me for a goddamn while.

An impressive body horror turn-based RPG. The partner system is great, and each character feels unique. Even the enemies are varied and well designed. There are several disturbing moments, however the game manages to feel cozy somehow.
