The presentation side of the game checked a lot of boxes for me because both the visuals and sound design had a retro feel with a modern touch combined as well. I really enjoyed the boss battles in the game because each boss has its own style which meant that defeating each boss required something new. Technically the game is pretty much perfect in all areas and when you combine that with the very fluid controls it means the frustration levels stay low. While the game can be a little too difficult every now and then for the most part I think they’ve got the balance of being fun and challenging at the same time spot on. The story was a little too basic for my liking and there wasn’t really much that stood out on the whole. I enjoyed the combat elements in the game but it would’ve been nice to have come across more varied enemies. In terms of content the game doesn’t have a huge amount and there isn’t much in terms of replayabilty either. The Metroidvania genre and style is definitely one of the most popular in the industry and I must admit that I enjoy this style that much that I nearly play a game of this type at least once a week every week. As you can imagine then I was eager to get to grips with JackQuest: The Tale of the Sword and thankfully despite it having a few shortcomings It was pretty enjoyable on the whole. At it’s core then this game is a platformer with a few nice puzzles thrown in for good measure and when you combine the decent combat as well the game does have a decent amount of depth present in it. Unfortunately though in terms of content there isn’t a great deal and once completed you’re highly unlikely to return back to the game. The content it does have though is technically sound and in my opinion they’ve got the perfect balance of being fun and challenging at the same time which means you don’t get frustrated very often. In terms of problems then the game doesn’t have many but more variety would’ve been nice and a more captivating story would’ve also been a welcome addition. Despite this though JackQuest: The Tale of the Sword still gets more things right than it gets wrong and if you’re a fan of these types of game’s then I’m sure you’ll be satisfied with what this game brings to the table. Thumbs up.
