The story is what really what makes Iron Storm rock!

The game's story manages to draw through its limitations, and the shoot-em-up gameplay is enjoyable for the segments when it's not so tough we're tearing our hair out.

So, this game is far from perfect, but at the time of it's release was a graphically impressive, deeply immersive, realistic war adventure, and it was as TOUGH AS NAILS! I got a lot of play time out of it, and deeply enjoyed the game, though I imagine that - if I were to replay it today - it wouldn't hold up to modern releases in the same genre.

Not for the easily frustrated, but unique enough to attract serious FPS fans. [Jan 2003, p.116]

Though it sets up nicely with a strong storyline, it really just becomes another mission-based shooter game.

Iron Storm does look and feel dated because of the graphics, and because of the type of gamplay that is offered. While it does feel like a complete game, and while I did feel satisfied playing it, it left me felling like the storyline should have been done justice.

Fail[s] to live up to its potential. What's left is simply a frustrating and tedious single-player game.

Isn't as bad as getting trench foot or being castrated by shrapnel, but it's still so full of tedium and frustration that paying for the game is pretty much an act of self-flagellation. [Feb 2003, p.98]

There are three types of games: - the good ones let you choose different ways to reach an objective (e.g. Deus Ex, Bioshock, Sniper Elite); - the mediocre ones force you through a single, linear way; - the bad ones let you think you can choose, but punish you when you try a way that's not what the designer intended. Alas, Iron Storm is the third type of game (most of the time, at least). When you try something different, it hinders you in unfair ways (you slow to a crawl, you meet invincible enemies...). Some levels are good (the trenches, the town), but some are quite awful (the underground facility, the train), or confusing and frustrating (the final Reichstag). On top of this, you have a few bugs, and an irritating unbalanced difficulty (I played on Easy... and it was sometimes too easy, and sometimes very hard!). Its "saving grace" is you can fast save anywhere; and trust me, saving often it's the only to way to finish this game while keeping your sanity. The premise was good and the game has some interesting ideas and atmosphere, but it also has uninspired locales and gameplay: in the end, it's a game that could have been good, but it's seriously flawed. Try it if you find it cheap and you have low expectations, but prepare to be frustrated.
