HHPAY Kaznapped Review This is one of the first GBA games I played to the end of, and for a game this late into the lifespan in the handheld console, it’s particularly average. Hihi Puffy AmiYumi Kaznapped is a puzzle style side scroller released in 2005, marketed towards female gamers aged 8-10. What it has in store is not bad in theory, in fact this game is quite enjoyable when not looking at it with a critical mindset, that’s not why I’m talking today. There are obvious flaws with this game; If this is the one of the most positively reviewed Cartoon Network licensed games, the standards are incredibly low. This is a quick review on HiHi Puffy Ami Yumi, Kaznapped for the Game Boy Advance. The Gameplay The way this game plays out is pretty good, you use the two main characters of the show, Ami and Yumi to control your way around the game. Yumi is a quicker character who can break and move boxes to progress through the levels. Ami is a character that is slower, but she has extra jumps and can swing onto ceilings using a rope to go across huge pits. Other than a few scenarios in late stages, this entire game can be finished using mostly Yumi’s character if you are familiar with the mechanics, however, since this game is targeted towards children who are not actively looking for different ways to complete the game, it provides a good challenge for younger audiences. The controls are a bit delayed and slow, but that might just be bias depending on what games you have played before. If Ami were to get more utilization in the game, this could be much more fun and intriguing. Level Design I don’t have much positive things to say about the level design, as it is one of the turn-offs many people have to this game. Early game levels can be completed in less than a minute and are extremely linear, but at some point, halfway during in the game, the game starts to care more about the puzzle elements and levels can drag on FOREVER, sometimes even past the time limit where you’d be forced to go through the whole process again which doesn’t make the game anymore fun. The sudden switch in level style is quite annoying and I wish it stuck to one genre instead of a sudden switch. Music and Art The sprite work for this game is very good. The character portraits are accurate to the TV show counterpart and do quite well with the shading and emotion portrayed, despite the limitations of the 32-bit console it was developed for. The music direction, however, is a serious problem with this game. None of the music in this game sounds good at all. Too many of the tracks sound similar, using a hard bass throughout the entire soundtrack and most of the music sounds compressed. Even the boss music is a remix of the song “Hi!Hi!” by Puffy AmiYumi, but it’s done in the most awful way possible. Using the same instruments throughout the entire game makes the levels feel even more repetitive and hard to deal with. In conclusion, while this game is pretty good for what it has to offer, it’s still below average in Game Boy Advance standards. I haven’t got an opportunity to play any other Cartoon Network games, but I will be sure to make more reviews and compare future or past titles with this one. Overall, it’s a pretty good puzzle game for little kids, but if you are an older gamer, you might not find this game very challenging.
