Thoughtful, bold (in colour and execution), and with absolute faith in its players to handle being cast into the glorious unknown, Future Unfolding is a rare delight. If these words inspired any desire to play it whatsoever, then do so; before you learn too much else about it.

Future Unfolding doesn’t compete with the open world delights of this season’s big hitters like Horizon: Zero Dawn or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but instead offers a wonderfully relaxed and immersive combat-free alternative. It’s a safari rather than a big game hunt, but one that deserves to be explored.

Future Unfolding is a proper UFO. Even if it’s a bit repetitive, it’s moslty weird and hypnotizing before anything else. Not to mention that it’s also beautiful, for the pleasure of our eyes and ears.

At the outset, Future Unfolding is magical experience; an elegant world waiting to be explored, with wonder at every step. But with each discovery, the wonder disappears – and isn’t replaced with anything new. Once you’ve uncovered everything the game has to show you, puzzles soon become petty barriers, the magic runs out and the procedurally-generated world loses its charm. In the end, Future Unfolding keeps unfolding for just a little too long.

Future Unfolding is a game of love and hate. It could be an interesting concept to explore if you like experimental game design and unique experiences, but at its core, more than once the gameplay mechanics simply don't work.
