Fantastic remake. Comes with both versions, original and remake. The voice overs and script are incredible. Game is just as good as before except a bit more fluid than the original. Well done interface as well. Wish they kept certain things from the previous versions but all in all, this is one of the best titles square has released.
This remaster brings fresh life into one of the greatest video games ever made. The only complaint one could make is that they didn’t include the War of the Lions content (maybe future DLC Square?), but the quality of life updates and voice acting are so good, I don’t have it in me to give a score any lower than 10/10. Here’s hoping a quality true sequel is in the works for fans to look forward to
In a year packed with JRPGs and anticipated returns, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles marks the triumphant return of one of the most influential titles in the tactical genre.
Excellent remaster. Honestly, this is the bar against other remasters should be measured. The voiceacting, the graphic upgrades, tiny small but necessary tweaks to balance. All great.
A solid re-release of the original game that has a lot of quality of life additions for the combat and refined dialogue/ voice acting to add additional weight behind the scenes and actions taking place I loved the original and this will be the definitive edition of the game for me whenever I want to replay it.
Couldn't make it through either the original nor the PSVita re-release and thought maybe this would be the time. Not so much, it's still the same tired game and story. Well played SQEX, you got me again. Hopefully if there's ever another release, I'll find this review to prevent me from purchasing.
Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles Remaster is an absolute triumph — the definitive version of a tactical RPG masterpiece. The updated visuals are stunning yet faithful to the original’s unique aesthetic, breathing new life into Ivalice without losing its soul. The reorchestrated soundtrack is breathtaking, enhancing every battle and emotional moment. Gameplay remains as deep and rewarding as ever, with refined mechanics and quality-of-life improvements that make each strategic decision feel meaningful. The political intrigue, complex characters, and morally gray storytelling still shine brighter than most modern games. This remaster isn’t just nostalgia — it’s a celebration of one of the greatest tactical RPGs ever made, polished to near perfection. A must-play for veterans and newcomers alike.
Square Enix used to set the bar. Now they trip over it and blame the floor. This so-called remaster is the purest distillation of modern Square Enix which is hazy, thin, conflicted, and allergic to feedback. They can't even get their flagship series Final Fantasy right when all the work has pretty much done for them in this case. The original is a masterpiece and can't even get that right. It is more crayon drawing on top of a Shakespeare play. It took them seven years to ship a basic facelift. The original was built in 13 months. Fans waited longer for less. They stated they lost the source code. That wasn't the only thing they lost. -Full price for a minimal remaster. No meaningful additions, just a receipt that reads like a collector's tax that can be over $200 and doesn't even include the game. -They discarded the PSP content because “faithfulness,” then lift the PSP translation anyway. Faithful when it's convenient, derivative when it saves time.
-Balance mangled by ideology. Gender terms scrubbed and gender-locked gear removed, tilting heavily toward male units and devauling females. Cometic on the surface, game-changing in reality.
-Scripts rewritten (JP & EN) to "add info" and make it easier for the voice-actors. Removal of "God" to the "Father" is just more concealed censorship.
-Audio identity dulled. Death cries and chocobo are changed completely and sound strange. -Default blur like a bad Photoshop filter. Yes, you can disable it but it is shipped as the look of the game which is telling of its overall product.
-"New content”? Just a preorder outfit. So additions are possible, you just have to pay more first. This isn’t preservation and it isn’t modernization. It’s a cash-grab with a conscience cosplay lecturing the fanbase about purity while gutting what made the PS and even PSP version valuable and charging more for less. Shills will clap; critics get blocked. When sales underperform yet again, SE will ask “what happened?” instead of reading the replies they’ve muted for years. What a competent release would've done in a fraction of the time: -PSP-content toggle (on/off) and better overall redrawing.
-If you’re killing gender-locked gear, replace the strategy depth you're removing or just don't do it at all to please a small minority. -Audio pack with original SFX selectable, not “trust us, it’s better.”
-Added content like multiplayer or just anything really. Until then, FFT Remaster is exactly what Square Enix has become: artistically timid, commercially cynical, and proudly unlistening. If they go eventually bankrupt or bought out, perhaps they will question what happened. No need to worry about the artistically bankrupt element though as it is in full-swing. Go with any other version and save your money. I wish I had.
I gave it a 7 for the voice acting and some minor improvements. FFTactics is one of the best games and story of all time. I just wish there had been more added to the story and different optional characters or areas, maybe a job class or two. Still happy to have it.
I was incredibly excited for this. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all time favorite games. Unfortunately, the team focused on quality of life updates in order to push this to a new generation instead of focusing on the gameplay/rpg mechanics that made it a classic among strategy fans. Removing the PsP content while keeping the WOTL script makes this a poorer version **** game. I don't recommend this version, if interested I would recommend the original or the PsP version with more content. At $50 this isn't the remaster fans were hoping for.
I believe I had already played this game when I was younger, but due to my lack of English knowledge at the time, I wasn’t able to understand the story. Now that I’m older, I can say: what a game! Certainly one of the best RPG stories out there, and to think the core of this game is so old is mind-blowing.Graphically, I think it went through a huge evolution. I understand that a lot of people appreciate pixel art, but I’m not one of them, I find the old version objectively inferior. I don’t get how people prefer the old art (I went through something similar with FF6, where unlike most people, I chose the non–pixel art graphics version). The game has charismatic characters, the gameplay is satisfying, and the Tactician difficulty is both challenging and fun. It’s important to highlight that the interface is very easy to navigate, from the world map to the encyclopedia they added, which even helps you understand the current state of the world and/or the whereabouts of certain stones. Finally, I took one point off because Square Enix didn’t translate the game into Brazilian Portuguese. HOWEVER, the voice acting turned out so good [ so incredibly good ] that I gave it an extra point, bringing it back to a perfect 10. I recommend it!
Incredible remaster with many quality of life improvements, everyone should try this classic one now in its best version. Also the voice acting is top tier!
Based on a great game, but the bare minimum of what makes a remaster save for the voice acting. It's definitely not the definitive edition as better versions of the game already exist with more content.
It's the best version of the game compared to both the PS1 and PSP version, but a lot more could have been done. For veteran players the game is still too easy because story battles still have a fixed level, so if you farm to unlock jobs and abilities you'll soon find yourself much more powerful than your enemies, while random battles scale to the player's level random battles against cats could potentially be much harder than story fights against knights and wizards. If you don't care about this aspect and just want to play fort the story, you're in for a treat here, overall it's still the best srpg of all time with great characters, lore and story.
Easily the definitive version of Final Fantasy Tactics. Has way better performance than the PSP version, superior translation than the original version. Love the new quality of life additions. And, I don't normally like voice acting in my re-release retro games, but Square Enix did a fantastic job in my opinion.
Nada nuevo, una versión inferior a la de PSP y iPad. El juego es adictivo de por sí, pero la falta de traducción en un juego con una historia tan compleja es terrible. No es tan difícil traducir el juego.
There are few people on this planet that love ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’ than I do. I first played it when it was first released on the original PlayStation in 1997/8 (don’t remember exactly now) and I have played it every year since, mostly on my iPad once the ‘War of the Lions’ version, which is superb, was released for iOS. I have been begging for a remake/remaster for literal decades now. After so many years Squeenix finally listened and gave us ‘The Ivalice Chronicles’ and. . . it’s okay. Just okay. The main issue is that they didn’t include any of the ‘War of the Lions’ content in this version, and there’s no good reason why they shouldn’t have done so when it adds so much more fun content to the base game; I am thinking that Squeenix, whose greed knows no bounds, is planning on releasing the WoTL version as paid DLC and because I am obsessed with FF Tactics I will pull out my debit card and pay for it. I know, I know, I shouldn’t - but I will because I love being able to play one of my most favorite games to date (and I’m 47 so I’ve been playing video games for a loooooong time) on my big ol’ tv screen. This updated version is okay and would be excellent if there were no such thing as the ‘War of the Lions’ version out there. While I’m not a fan of the new UI (and I HATE that I can no longer change the Jobs of Guest Characters, something that I have done to these Guests forever and a day) having the Action Order on the left side of the screen is nice, and I absolutely LOVE the ‘Fast-Foward’ feature in combat because enemies are too darn slow and always have been. I also very much dislike the new menus for learning and assigning Abilities and for equipping weapons and armor. Not a fan of it whatsoever. I am absolutely unhappy with the included ‘Original Version’ of the game in this collection that is the version released on the original PlayStation - they outright removed the Job Points Scroll glitch. Yeah, that was technically cheating but who cares? It allowed players to spend less time mindlessly grinding and more time to actually enjoy the game, and there was no reason to remove it! It’s not like it would have been possible to use the glitch on the updated version at all so why not keep it on the original version that few people will probably ever play since most new players will just stick with the modern version of the game? Whenever there is fun to be had Squeenix isn’t happy if they’re not squashing the fun, that’s for sure. But despite my legitimate gripes it’s still ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’ and I’m going to play it, although I doubt that I will continue to play this version after I get all of the Achievements on console for the game; unless they do release the ‘War of the Lions’ version as DLC I’ll just go back to playing the game on my iPad. I do LOVE how virtually everything in the game has voice-acting, including the monsters and animals that you battle; however, the VO for monsters and critters tends to be a bit on the lousy side. Not all, but definitely some. I also very much enjoy the new ‘tactical view’ that allows you to scope out the battlefield in a top-down ‘birds-eye view’ as it’s really helpful and I think that new players would benefit from it immensely. Do I recommend this version to new players? Not at $50-$60, but I would if the game were on sale for $20-$30. It’s also difficult to recommend when some of the best content wasn’t included; the ‘War of the Lions’ version is available on iOS and Google Play (iOS for sure, not 100% positive if it’s available on Android) for far cheaper and is the absolute best version of the game. But when ‘The Ivalice Chronicles’ are on sale for $20 you should definitely consider checking it out as the new updated version is worth that imho. If Squeenix releases a WoTL DLC update for the game then it’s worth (again IMHO) $30 to $40. The lack of the WoTL content, special recruitable characters, the extra battles, and the extra Midnights Deep dungeon is not somehow negated by the new UI, a few but nice QoL adjustments, full voice acting, and menus more annoying than they should have been. I’m giving this release a 7/10 which hurts my heart; this should have been an absolute 10/10 recommendation that pretty much every video game fan should have rushed to pick up. Please note that I am playing the game on my Xbox Series X and not on my PS5, so I can only state that the game plays wonderfully and without technical hiccups such as frame-rate drops on the Series X and cannot tell you how the game runs on Series S, PS5, or on Switch 2 (i think that the game is being released on the Switch 2 but I’m not 100% certain on that) so please look for a Series S or PS5 review if you’re interested in buying the game for those consoles.
One of the best tactical RPG games to ever exist if not the best at all, the amount of consideration and interciate design went into this game, jobs, mecahnics, abilites ,**** is one of the most well made, with ivalice chronicales even better with a sleek and more informative UI, quality of life changes, and the best of all is: full fledged high quality voice acting, with british historical accent that reminds you of HBO's GoT or FF12. If you like tactical RPGs, this is a blind buy, almost like buying Elden Rings as a souls-like lover
A gripping story that will have you playing late into the night just to uncover a bit more about this complex political and religious landscape, and an endlessly customizable job system that encourages experimentation and rewards creativity. What more could you ask for? Docked a point for presentation - even though I love it and it harkens back to PS1 era games, the in-game graphics aren't the most appealing for modern audiences.
Great classic of a legendary JRPG/Strategy game from the late 90's. I previously played this game all the way back when it was released on the PS1, and then the PSP version way back in the early 2000's. It's a Legendary strategy game that still holds up today quite well. I would recommend playing on the classic mode. Everyone seems to be gushing over the new enhanced mode, but for me personally I didn't care for the new voice acting in some ways it was a bit jarring and distracting. For example, units will bark or start talking even when taking damage or when they die they will make some annoying death sound, it really isn't necessary and in some ways turned me off from playing the mode. So I immediately started a new game with the original, which by large is the exact same game you remember from the 90's, without any of the new "additions". It's perfect as it is and didn't really need an "enhanced" version. I suspect that is just for the newer gen Z type gamers who have low attention spans and don't want to actually read? the voice acting is terrible in that enhanced version so it's actually sort of funny it is being praised so much. Just because it is "new" doesn't make things automatically better. Also, the new up-resolution of the graphics feels sort of fake and like bad art upscaling the art. I don't know if they used AI or not but it just doesn't look as good as the original art and you can tell easily. All in all, a phenomenal game and one I am very grateful for Square-Enix to have remastered. They also did a much better job ( read night and day difference) of this title compared to that dumpster fire "remake" for Front Mission 3. They should have left the original game as an option to play, but ruined it instead with new incredibly bad art direction and design that wasn't in the original game. Now, please remaster VAGRANT STORY and Xenogears next Square-Enix!
