If you enjoy platformers and you have an inkling of interest in learning more about Japan, BAKERU might be the perfect package for you
Each stage is its own treat and without spoiling levels there’s not much to say other than it plays really well. I never doubted GoodFeel’s talent because I’ve seen their work; this was clearly a passion project as they published this themselves in Japan, so I imagine the budget wasn’t huge, yet they still produced a high-quality game. I had a lot of fun.
Bakeru is a highly endearing little 3D platformer, one with a well-polished design and lots of fun ideas to spice things up during its relatively lengthy adventure. It really commits to its bit, and that part of it is almost infectious. Some framerate issues keep this from being all it could be on Switch, and I think people who come into this expecting Goemon are going to be disappointed by the fact that it’s not even trying to be that, but otherwise this is a highly-recommended title to close out your summer with.

Bakeru, the Nintendo Switch exclusive by Good-Feel that almost never left Japan, has all the makings of a future rare game. It released in the west right before the Switch 2 came out, had very little marketing or fanfare behind it, and is a game heavily ingrained in Japanese culture. I have no doubt this will be a rare gem I'll be happy to have on my shelf, but as for the quality, I can see why this one almost wasn't localized. Not to say there is something wrong with little action-platformer, on the contrary it's very charming. You play as a tanuki who fights enemies with drumsticks, and can transform to change your style of combat. You travel through Japan's various cities and prefectures, learn trivia about the area and other general fun facts, and follow a simple story about stopping an evil festival from covering the country. It's fun, but not something that would appeal to all audiences. If I have any issues at all, it's that I found the experience a bit long. It's strange to complain about too much content, but while several levels are built on brilliant ideas, some also felt a little repetitive. There are around 60 stages, but some felt so similar to others that I feel like it could have been condensed to 30. There is also a lot of reuse of the music and enemy types, as well as a few special levels that told me the same tutorial each time I played them. This made it hard to play for more than an hour or so at a time, which made this game's nearly 20 hour runtime a little rough. Still, it was a fun way to unwind a little before bed each night, and overall I enjoyed my time touring Japan.

As someone who is waiting desperately for a new Mystical Ninja Starring GOEMON-Game i had to play it! And even if it lacks the craziness of Konamis series, it still gave me that Goemon-vibes and i love it for that. The gameplay is solid, the soundtrack amazing. Thank you for Bakeru!

From Good-Feel Inc, Bakeru leads with the impression that it's a successor to Konami's Ganbare Goemon. It's really not. While having some of the same "beats" as Goemon, Bakeru is its own quirky game, and a good one at that. The platforming and action is simple, but not mindlessly dull. The levels are of a decent size with a gentle difficulty curve. Scattered throughout the levels are 8 collectibles; 5 of which are basically Snapple facts. Criticisms can be levied for the platforming being basic and the world lacking depth, but those would take away from the simplicity. What is here, is a silly romp. Perfect for young children or tired adults who just want to relax.

Bakeru is a delightful modern 3D platformer that captures the essence of classic titles like Goemon. With its vibrant world, challenging combat, and engaging exploration, Bakeru stands out as a must-play for genre fans. Despite some minor shortcomings in its combat mechanics, the game’s overall execution and nostalgic appeal make it an unforgettable experience.

BAKERU is a highly enjoyable action-packed 3D platformer that truly captures that 'good feel.' It delivers a nostalgic trip back to the fun, arcade-style games of the early 2000s, all wrapped in rich Japanese lore. Every corner holds a surprise, and the diverse gameplay phases add depth to the exploration. The best part? This future hidden gem from Japan is getting a western release! Don’t miss out on this incredible, fully fleshed-out adventure.

Worth Playing
Bakeru is a cute, fun, instantly accessible game for kids of all ages — and maybe even some adults. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it's a pleasantly comfortable platformer that provides the sort of pleasant experience you'd expect from a developer named Good-Feel. The only things potentially holding back the title are that it's a bit simple and basic for older gamers, and there's some occasionally poor performance. If you're a parent looking for a safe and comfy game for your kids, Bakeru is a great choice.

Nintendo Life
Bakeru is a sweet, snappy, and satisfying linear 3D platformer that feels like a wonderful callback to a genre that doesn’t get a ton of representation these days. It’s really easy (although the Western version ups the difficulty slightly) and has some performance problems, but the gameplay variety, snappy combat, oodles of collectibles, and gorgeous art style all come together to make for an adventure that you won’t want to miss out on.

This is a lengthy action platformer geared towards kids that will get mileage out of those that previously enjoyed Goemon titles back in the day. There are many similarities between Konami's sidelined franchise and BAKERU, but Good-Feel's latest release suffers from repetitive gameplay and a poor frame rate that hinders enjoyment. There is a strong appeal to the Japanese themes and setting, along with a cartoon style, child-friendly story and low difficulty that means all age groups can appreciate it. Just don't expect something quite reaching the qualities of Nintendo's top platformers.

(MY SCORE : 8 /10) An exciting 3D Action-Adventure Platformer game that relies on Slash and Shooter in its combat, which is also accompanied by Flight Combat and Racing elements. In this game, we become the Bakeru of the Tanuki clan, who together with his best friend from the Issun clan, Sun, using the "Taiko" Stick and the "Haraidako" Drum as weapons, explore 47 prefectures in Japan, to free these cities from the attacks of evil spirits, Yokai and Oracle Saitaro with his Festival Troops! Bakeru also has to face several heroes whose minds are influenced by Saitaro's Oracle so that they become evil, namely Kintaro at Mount Ashigara, Urashima Taro at Dragon Palace and Momotaro at Onigashima. After being able to defeat and awaken them, the heroes will give "Henge power" where Bakeru can transform into the Hero and use his power within a certain time limit! In progress, Bakeru can also ride Bunbuku, a unique flying Ketel Airship that can transform into a Robot to face giant monsters! Bakeru will also meet Browsby and Browsba, who have Karakuri Dog Heads and can transform into cars, Ski vehicles, or even planes for Bakeru to drive while racing or shooting down enemy planes in Battle Airship! Bakeru also has to save the Nanakusa Girls namely Nazuna, Gogyo, Seri, Hakobera, Hotoke-no-Za, Suzushiro, and Suzuna. The seven of them have the Magic power to perform purification rituals to cleanse Japan of all forms of evil, which the Nanakusa Girls are imprisoned by Oracle Saitaro to prevent them from doing so! Bakeru defeated Oracle Saitaro at Castle Tower in Tokyo! Dan managed to save all the Nanakusa Girls, and took them to Mount Fuji to perform the "Nanakusa Healing Secret Jutsu"Ritual. But it turned out that the Ritual failed, there was a huge force blocking them! And the power is possessed by the Nine-Tailed humanoid baby figure of the Kitsune clan, the Ninetails, who turns out to be the real mastermind as well! It was he who controlled Saitaro's mind to wreak havoc on the entire Prefecture of Japan! Dan Bakeru must face the Ninetails in the Ninetails Castle, Outer Space, and defeat them! LIST BOSS: Kintaro. Urashima Taro. Momotaro. Mega Takoyaki. Pharaoh. Dai-Con. Oracle Saitaro. Onigiri Sentry. Master Kokeshi. Musashi & Kojiro. Oracle Saitaro. And ENDING BOSS : Ninetails (2nd Phase). There are 63 stages in this game.

I could barely make it through any of the demo. My head was truly done in with the music after 1 minute, after 10 minutes my brain was fried. The game was pretty good but really not in to the excessive use of shoulder buttons for a platformer. That music makes it unplayable though.

Why can't I raise the camera more? Feels like I can only look at my feet, it's annoying. Also if you change the movement keys, you still have to use the old keys in the map, so keybinding is flawed
