Akiba Lost is a fascinating live-action visual novel that turns its interconnected character routes into an absorbing mystery. Its inventive perspective-switching, strong cast, and wealth of filmed material make Akihabara feel remarkably alive, even if an overlong runtime, excessive late-game recaps, and a few goofy twists keep the mystery from maintaining its momentum throughout.

There’s a lot to love in Akiba Lost. Its colorful ensemble are all explored in-depth, its vast amount of glossary terms are as fun to read as they are informative, and its ambitious cinematographic live-action presentation blending still shots and video clips into its sound novel format. I think the overall story’s direction takes some odd turns as it nears its finale, but the journeys every character takes to get there is a great, delightful read.

Akiba Lost turns an unsolved disappearance into a sprawling live-action mystery with a likable cast and perspective switching puzzles. Its restrictive choices and repeated scenes sometimes expose the rails beneath the drama. Still, fans of 428: Shibuya Scramble should enjoy getting lost in this affectionate tribute to Electric Town.
