True Detective: Season 2

Undeniably television's greatest letdown of 2015. Both characters and plot are boring and incapable of evoking any sort of emotion. Colin Farrell's character is too **** to be likable, and not **** enough to be interesting. Vince Vaughn gets awkwardly two-dimensional. Taylor Kitsch never even develops. Only Rachel McAdams avoids being a complete disaster, and her character is a walking cliche. Furthermore the writing is dreadful; the characters don't seem to care about solving this murder, so why should we? To think that this drivel comes from the same series that gave us one of TV's greatest seasons ever is just downright depressing.

Season 1 episodes summed up: Bad guy comes to town. Oliver kicks ass. Season 2 episodes summed up: Bad guy comes to town. Oliver fails to capture him, then talks about his feelings to Diggle and Felicity. They give him a pep talk. Meanwhile someone else steps up to save the day. Oh man, what a disappointment. Oliver is about as much of a superhero as a whiny teenager in this season. In season 1 we had a fun, relentless vigilante who not only was a clear badass, but made even more intriguing by his Dexter-esque execution of villains. Now we have a guy who appears unable to stop much of anything in his path without help from people more powerful than himself, and who refuses to kill because his dead friend "wouldn't want it". That's not where the problems with this season end, either. The human drama element of the show has collapsed entirely, falling to the quality of a pretty bad soap opera. Rarely does a character act in a way that doesn't reek of being forced by the writers in an attempt to create drama. So many subplots simply start and end with little justification for doing other. From the start, Arrow has been plagued with the sappy dialogue you'd expect in a network drama, but I think the problem may have been pride. The writers seem unaware that the show would best function as a typical, cliched superhero action thriller. They attempt to reach for intellectual stars but every time fail to draw conclusions of even the slightest depth. Attempting to be a deep, dark examining of the human condition just looks silly, considering that this show not only fails at realism, but at any form of true character development.

Easily the show's best season, even if its finale does fall flat. Watching Oliver Queen dole out vigilante justice in a morally gray manner makes for great television. It has its weaknesses no doubt, but as a fun, if at times repetitive, action series, Arrow does a good job. Unlike the later seasons, this one gets the formula just about right, properly balancing the action and primary conflict with just the right measures of human subplot and moral debate.

BoJack Horseman: Season 1

The only real strength of Bojack Horseman is impeccable casting. Aside from that, it's a highly overrated show. I just can't believe how much people fail to realize that this is nothing more than a circlejerk of Hollywood snubbery at its worst. The whole show relies on (inaccurate) criticisms of sitcoms and our culture in general. Please, any show that thinks MSNBC is right-leaning ought to have its writing staff euthanized. Furthermore, it fails to be anything beyond simply depressing. The character arc of Bojack is really just a ripoff of the later seasons of House, M.D. I only kept watching for Todd's side adventures. They make the rest of this drivel somehow not completely unbearable.
