I went into The Disaster Artist as someone who had seen bits and pieces of The Room, and had just watched it before my first viewing. When watching The Disaster Artist, I was blown away with how accurate the acting seemed, found the insight into the background of the film to be interesting, and was surprised with how many famous actors were in this. I think that any person who enjoys The Room should do themselves a favor and watch this, aside from being enjoyable, it's interestingly insightful. I enjoyed it just as much on my second view as my first.
A funny and uplifting biopic about a down and out entertainer who finds a second wind in his career and becomes a star. I found this movie to be charming with a bunch of laughs, it felt very positive throughout thanks to Eddy Murphy's upbeat demeanor of Rudy Ray Moore. A great light-hearted movie with a happy finish.
A story centering about a homophobic racist southern roadeo rider who finds out he has aids and his friends turn on him during the aids epidemic in the 80s. Treatment isn't available outside of trials so he seeks results in Mexico and finds a successful mix of legal drugs. Struggling with pushback from the FDA after he sets up a successful "buyers club" for others in the area to be treated, while struggling with a difficult relationship with his drag queen partner whom he grows to at least respect, played amazingly by Jared Leto. Jennifer Garner plays a charming doctor who befriends Matthew McConaughey and helps him in some ways. It's a great movie.
A ballsy black comedy romance centered around the holocaust and the ending days of it. It surprisingly pulls it off well and shows the main characters as people who are or end up being against the war and **** in general. Good performances all around, especially from the young actors. Pacing felt correct, it ended before it became a bore. Many laughs had through the film.
La La Land is a movie that affected me deeply from start to finish. Vibrant colors, beautiful songs, excellent acting, fantastic cinematography, and top-notch acting are aplenty in this film. The first time I viewed La La Land it took my breath away, and I don't mean that metaphorically, I literally did not think to breath for at least 10 seconds. I felt that the world had paused, it hit me hard with the brilliant ending sequence. I've since seen La La Land 3 more times and each time it still affects me emotionally, Damien Chazelle has done it again. I had no idea he directed this and Whiplash when I had first seen this, but I was a huge fan of Whiplash as another movie that affected me emotionally. La La Land is a masterpiece and has solidified itself as my favorite movie of all-time. It is beautiful in every capacity, vibrant and boisterous as much as it is melancholy. Thank you Damien for creating this movie.
I am a bit surprised with how well this is scored from a user perspective. The cinematography is pretty solid, as is the acting, and the script is decent. That's all fine and dandy, it's a technically solid film in that way. It's supposed to be a horror film though and not once did me or the other 4 people watching feel suspense, worry, or scared in any capacity. Pennywise would certainly be a scary thing to deal with in real life, but I don't think the movie did anything to give any credit to that. Furthermore the pacing is not very good, we paused it shortly after the bathroom clean-up and were all shocked that there was nearly 40 minutes left. I never saw the original, but I don't really care to after seeing this.
I've never seen a movie by this studio, to be honest in terms of Japanese animation I've not seen much, mostly Ghibli. I saw that this was getting huge praise so I had to check it out. I think that the beginning was a bit confusing, but by the end I was enamored with the unique tale between two people tied together across time. It was a great movie.
A harrowing war movie following two soldiers broken up into two parts. The first part shows the dehumanization of boot camp, while the second half shows the brutality of war and how it changes humans. I found this movie to be a roller coaster, one that I'll think about for a while.
My advice is to not read anything about this movie before going into it. The movie is excellent because it leads you to places you had no expectation of. Stay away from the reviews.
