Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

I have long awaited playing this title. I've been sure that it's going to be spectacular, I just haven't excepted being **** to pieces. It has been one hel(l) of a journey. I'd wish that there were an option to erase this memoir, so I could experience Senua's story once again. I'd wish that I could use it indefinitely. It would be perfect if it came up with a clicker. I would push it whenever I'm for some profound feelings of love intertwined with ferocity and fathomless solicitude. One, albeit gigantic caveat: the unfortunate mental health disclaimer at the game's start-up. Some of Hellblade's puzzles can really make you question your sanity. Because those who have designed them certainly are out of their minds and catatonia seems like the only rescue for their delusions. It would make them unable to spew allegedly "clever" ideas out of their limb-controlling devices. I haven't except Hellblade to be this immersive. + behind the scenes video + Melina Juergens performance + furies + Sea of Corpses + motion capture + no HUD + no loading screens + combat + slo-mo + a pretty decent horror + music + emotional loading + Odin's trials + the last boss fight + Norse mythology - typography - some puzzles are questionable at best

Penumbra: Black Plague

Penumbra goes like this: you discover a room with a cage full of dead dogs. Crawling, you enter a kennel, because who knows? It's a video game and maybe there's a collectible in there (indeed, there was). While inside, you start to hear barking noises outside. Obviously you go out from your freshly acquired condo, because as a player you ain't no wimp. Besides you there is no sign of life, so you go out the room, only to discover that behind the door is a flesh and bone dog charging at you. So you paranoidly close the door behind you and in an instant you are back in the kennel. This time you are certain that barking noises are real. After a short break for recollecting your sanity, you go outside and cautiously approach the door. The dog has vanished. 10/10 would bark again. + logical puzzles + plot + genuinely scary + a voice in your head + a physics engine - grain filter - frequent loading screens - I have managed to get killed by a wooden board falling from like an inch above my head

Quake

To this day I thought that Duke Nukem 3D was the best FPS as of 1996. Sorry, Duke, but Quake have trembled me so strongly that I can't help but invalidate my point. Fully three-dimensional, chunky weapons, meaty sounds... It seems that Quake got named that for a reason. Nothing says "I love you" as much as nailing a fiend while quad damage is on. Regarding music: it's perfectly possible to make it play, at least with GoG version of the game. It's included with game files and it's just a matter of properly applying it (check GoG forum for more details). Now, are you gonna quit this game just like anything else? + simply glorious + giving a devil a shock treatment + skyboxes + sick music + sound effects + dark ambiance + no plot nonsense + meaty weapons + particle system + lighting gun + E4's brilliant design + an easy difficulty is not a nightmare in disguise - glitches (it might be on QuakeSpasm end, though)

Quake Mission Pack No. 1: Scourge of Armagon

New weapons and enemies, bigger levels, richer music... I don't like it. I was hoping that I would be able to turn my brain off completely, just as in the original. In Scourge of Armagon I have found myself wondering which route to take way too much. It dilutes the gameplay and greatly diminishes pace that Quake is known from. I believe that there is nothing worse than an FPS that forces you to think. Maybe higher difficulty levels mitigates it? + Thor's hammer + music - levels, although impressive, aren't really fun to play - glitches

140 is a sweet little platformer where synchronizing your movement with the music is often the key to progress further in the game. I was scanning through Humble Trove for a casual title when I found this gem. There are 4 main levels and it took me about 2 hours to complete them. 4 more levels unlock when you complete the game, although they incorporate permadeath. I didn't sign for a nerve-racking experience, and it was only until I deleted the game that I realized that it would be cool to smash them too. High five, the previous me. + your character appearance depends on context + M-U-S-I-C + convenient checkpoints + bosses + rhythmic awareness + minimalistic graphics - I came to love the game for what it is

Clive Barker's Undying

I have troubles with this game. My main concern is that I find it archaic, but it's hard to me to blame it for just that - being old. How about an astounding ability to neglect your saved game states accompanied with a crash that will inevitably happen when you alt+tab? Luckily the solution is simple: just don't do this. And pray it wouldn't corrupt your save for some totally random reason, forcing you to use cheats to restore your progress, which in turn can be mitigated by utilizing many save slots. Or just don't buy it. Yeah, it would be an appropriate solution if it weren't for it's brilliant ambiance and engaging gameplay, which may be a bit of a stretch given that it's a shooter that fails to deliver. I find it mediocre, yet I love it and I'm considering replaying it in the future. A truly undying title. + a journal + the main music theme + Oneiros + level design - you fight flying electric eels cross-breed with piranhas - using cheats may be your only chance to restore your progress and it messes with your difficulty level - obnoxious HUD - frequent loading screens - bugs - the final boss, when you think about it

Reed

I consider Reed to be a pretty bland platformer. It saddens me, because I sense how it resonates with the same brilliance that distinguishes VVVVVV. I perceive it as a little humble platformer, and I find it hard to love it for what it is. I imagine Reed's ambitions to be far greater than that, like Guybrush Threepwood departing for a journey to become a mighty pirate. I had fun playing it, however I'm afraid that's only because I finished it in no time and that greatly appeases my backlog. + tiny levels + pace + pretty, pixelated graphics + short + easy - movement stick seems to be unreliable for me, although I had no troubles with d-pad - incomprehensible font - a little bit unfair at times - level design
