War Room

-War Room is a 2015 American Christian drama film directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written and produced by Stephen Kendrick. War Room is the Kendrick brothers' fifth film project and their first film project through Kendrick Brothers Productions. Provident Films, Affirm Films and TriStar Pictures partnered with the Kendrick brothers to release the film. -Regarding the title of the film, director Kendrick says "We called it 'War Room' because, like the military, we should seek God for the right strategy before going into combat. By combat, I mean daily issues we face in our culture." The film was released in North American theaters on August 28, 2015, and received generally negative reviews from critics, but became a box office success and a sleeper hit. Regarding War Room's box office performance, CNN said "some might call it a faith-based David versus the secular Goliaths in the entertainment industry". --African-American portrayal: -Initial plans had the main characters being white; however, Alex began having dreams about a predominantly African-American cast and, believing that God was trying to tell him something, the brothers switched the characters to make it more in line with Alex's dream. Early on, Sony expressed some concerns over a film with a mostly African-American cast produced by a white-led production company, but the brothers stuck to the premise. -Several characters in the film are African-American and being released only months after the Charleston church shooting, those involved with the film claim to believe that the timing of release is no coincidence. According to director Kendrick, when Affirm Films first saw the film, they claimed, "If this had been told with a different race, it would be a different movie." -Stallings, who plays a major role in the film, says, "There are many people out there—white and black—who stay with their families and work through their problems. They aren’t thugs or gang leaders. ’War Room’ tells the truth about society by showing the reverse of that stereotype. Racial tension is dangerous and people are dying and a lot of us want to see that stopped. We protest and speak out and tweet out, but this problem is much bigger than human beings. This movie will give people a way to take these problems to the Lord and show them that prayer is the best weapon to fight back." --Critical response: -War Room has received mostly negative reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a rating of 34%, based on reviews from 32 critics, with an average rating of 4.4/10.Metacritic gives the film a score of 26 out of 100, based on reviews from 11 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". -The Christian Post praised the film, calling it better than Courageous and Fireproof. According to **** "it comes as good news that War Room is a step up for the Kendricks, who continue to develop as filmmakers." Nick Olszyk of Catholic World Report similarly praised the film, writing it successfully portrayed "prayer... forgiveness, temptation, conversion, and, most importantly, the cosmic struggle between God and the devil that occur in every home and every heart." -The Los Angeles Times called the film more of a Bible study than anything else and "so heavy on broad pulpit pounding that it’s challenging to get swept away by the story’s message."

-The Conjuring 2 (alternatively known as The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist) is a 2016 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan. The film was written by Carey Hayes, Chad Hayes, Wan and David Leslie Johnson. It is the sequel to the film The Conjuring, which was released on July 19, 2013. The Warrens travel to the United Kingdom to assist the Hodgson family, who are experiencing poltergeist activity at their Enfield council house in 1977. -The film was released in the United States on June 10, 2016, by Warner Bros. Pictures. --Filming: -Principal photography for The Conjuring 2 began on September 21, 2015, in Los Angeles, California. Due to inexplicable eerie events during production of the first film, a priest from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe was brought in to bless the set of the sequel by the film's producers. Production moved to London on November 18, 2015, with filming taking place in and around The Warrington, a pub in the residential district of Maida Vale. On November 22, filming took place at Marylebone station. Filming concluded on December 1, 2015. Metacritic assigned the film a weighted average of 64 out of 100, based on 34 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". -In her review for The Hollywood Reporter, Sheri Linden praised the film, saying: "Three years after The Conjuring rattled the multiplex with old-school horror, director James Wan ups the ante with an excellent sequel." Owen Gleiberman of Variety gave the film a mixed review, writing: "On one level, The Conjuring 2 is just a not-bad megaplex funhouse movie, no more and no less, but on another level it offers its potential fans a helping of reassurance to go along with the fear. If there are ghost demons out there, then God must be out there as well. Audiences, it was long ago proven, will pay to see both." TheWrap's Alonso Duralde gave the film a positive review, stating: "Frightening rarely strikes twice in the same place, despite the efforts of so many horror sequels, but even if The Conjuring 2 doesn't deliver the delightful jolts of its predecessor, it maintains a consistent chill throughout, with a slow and steady dread that creeps up on you over time." -In a mixed review, Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B-, writing: "There are some solid scares (Wan is too gifted in the dark art of gotcha manipulation to not make you leap a few times), but there's nothing on par with the first film's brilliant hide-and-clap scene with Lili Taylor." Pete Hammond of **** wrote that he was "pleasantly surprised" by the sequel and what Wan has accomplished with the film, stating: "Wan knows the tricks of this trade (heightened sound effects, moving furniture, dark corners) but somehow miraculously he really puts a fresh spin on it all here. It's riveting stuff, even if in a familiar cinematic environment." He added: "It is one hell of a movie." --Possible sequel: -Director James Wan has said that a third Conjuring film is possible if response to The Conjuring 2 warranted it. He said: "There could be many more (Conjuring) movies because the Warrens have so many stories." Screenwriters Chad and Carey Hayes have also expressed interest in working on a story for another sequel. However, Wan stated that he may not have time to direct a third film because of his commitment to other projects.

On Metacritic, the film has a score of 74 based on 43 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". -Sean O'Connell of Cinema Blend gave the film four and a half stars out of five, and said it was "the greatest, most complete and staggeringly entertaining (X-Men film) to date". Empire gave it four out of five stars and called it, "The best X-Men film since the second one". Steve Rose of The Guardian rated the film three stars out of five; he said, "Non-devotees might struggle, but director Bryan Singer whips up the action towards a symphonic climax". David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter said, "While it's more dramatically diffuse than the reboot and lacks a definitive villain, the new film is shot through with a stirring reverence for the Marvel Comics characters and their universe." Justin Chang of Variety said, "If the characters' quandaries at times feel overly circumscribed, they're also advanced with a bracing emotional directness, devoid of either cynicism or sentimentalism, that touches genuine chords of feeling over the course of the film’s fleet 130-minute (sic) running time". -In contrast, Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph rated the film two stars out of five and called the plot "a curate's egg, thoroughly scrambled". He concluded, "The film squanders both of its casts, reeling from one fumbled set-piece to the next. It seems to have been constructed in a stupor, and you watch in a daze of future past." Simon Abrams, writing for ****, gave the film two-and-a-half stars out of four, calling it a "visually driven and paint-by-numbers-plot". Abrams was critical of the undeveloped subplots that built up because the film's pacing left little time to develop each element of the story set in the 1970s. --Sequel: -In December 2013, Singer announced X-Men: Apocalypse, an upcoming X-Men film acting as a sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past. Singer is attached to direct from a script by Simon Kinberg, Dan Harris, and Michael Dougherty. According to Singer, the next film will focus on the origin of the mutants. Kinberg said it will take place in 1983 and will complete a trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Rose Byrne, Lucas Till and Hugh Jackman will reprise their roles, with Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Hardy, Lana Condor, and Olivia Munn joining the cast. The film is set in a future desert wasteland where gasoline and water are scarce commodities. The film also features Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, and Courtney Eaton. --Critical reception: -Mad Max: Fury Road received widespread critical acclaim. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 97% approval rating and rating average score of 8.8 out of 10 based on 348 reviews. CinemaScore polls reported that the average grade cinema audiences gave the film was a "B+" on an A+ to F scale. Some critics have named Mad Max: Fury Road one of the greatest action films ever made. -The film has also been praised by feminist critics on several fronts, including the dominant role taken by Furiosa and the range of atypical female roles including the wives and the gun-toting Vuvalini. --Sequels: -In 2011, Miller and McCarthy found during the writing process for Fury Road that they had enough story material for two additional scripts. One of these, entitled Mad Max: Furiosa, had already been completed, and Miller hoped to film it after the release of Fury Road. In March 2015, during an interview with Esquire, Hardy revealed that he was attached to star in four more Mad Max films following Fury Road. In May 2015, Miller told Wired: "Should Fury Road be successful, I've got two other stories to tell." Later in May, Miller revealed that plans for the sequel had changed and the next instalment will instead be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland. In October 2015, Miller revealed in an interview with **** that they had two scripts for sequels which they ended up with during the writing process. Later in October in an interview with Digital Spy, he revealed that Furiosa won't appear in the sequel and clarified that Mad Max: The Wasteland is just a working title for the sequel. The film has received generally positive reviews, with lead actor Bryan Cranston nominated for several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor. However, the film has also been criticized for historical inaccuracies and misportrayals of important people and events. --Critical response: -Trumbo has received generally positive reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a rating of 74%, based on 144 reviews, with an average rating of 6.7/10. The site's critical consensus states, "Trumbo serves as an honorable and well-acted tribute to a brilliant writer's principled stand, even if it doesn't quite achieve the greatness of its subject's own classic screenplays." Metacritic gives the film a score of 60 out of 100, based on reviews from 33 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". -Despite generally positive reviews, several critics attacked the film for being historically misleading or for ideological reasons. Godfrey Cheshire of the Roger Ebert Journal wrote that Trumbo is “another of those simplistic, made-to-order films about the Hollywood blacklist in which the blacklisted movie folks are all innocent, in every conceivable way.” Cheshire decried the film's insinuation that Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on Un-American Activities created the Hollywood blacklist. In reality, the blacklist was created by Hollywood studio chiefs. Cheshire also wrote that the film defended international communism: “it invites us to the see the Communist Party USA as just another political party rather than as the domestic instrument of a hostile and ultra-murderous foreign tyranny.” -Other critics raised similar historical concerns. While the film portrays Trumbo as “a New Deal liberal hero defending civil liberties”, Ron Capshaw explained how the real Trumbo was an outspoken supporter of Soviet-style communism, including the brutal regimes of Joseph Stalin and North Korean dictator Kim Il-sung. The conservative Pat Buchanan questioned the appropriateness of portraying Trumbo as a “martyr to the first amendment” while overlooking his support for regimes that actively suppress free speech. Armond White of the National Review went a step further, accusing director Jay Roach of “unrestrained partisanship” for whitewashing the dark history of communist ideologies to invent a hero that supports Roach’s political views. --Alleged Robinson inaccuracy: -The film depicts actor Edward G. Robinson betraying his friend Dalton Trumbo and others by naming them as communists before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Robinson did testify four times before the committee and eventually stated that he had been a dupe of communist front organizations, but he never named anyone, friend or foe, as a communist. According to the transcript of a hearing on April 30, 1952, Robinson gave the following testimony: "Well, you had Albert Maltz, and you have Dalton Trumbo, and you have—what is the other fellow, the top fellow who they say is the commissar out there?", and after being prompted by his questioner (Mr. Walter), Robinson continued: "Yes, John Howard Lawson. I knew Frank Tuttle. I didn't know Dmytryk at all. There are the Buchmans, that I know, Sidney Buchman and all that sort of thing. It never entered my mind that any of these people were Communists." His testimony is re-enacted in the film, but with alterations, including to some of the names and their order. For instance, instead of John Howard Lawson, the composite character, Arlen Hird, is identified as "the commissar".

It tells the true story of Mary Shepherd, an elderly woman who lived in a dilapidated van on Bennett's driveway in London for 15 years. Smith previously portrayed Shepherd twice: in the original 1999 theatrical production, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 2000 Olivier Awards; and in the 2009 BBC Radio 4 adaptation. -Hytner directed the original stage production at the Queen's Theatre in London, while Bennett adapted the screenplay from his 1999 West End play of the same name, which was nominated at the 2000 Olivier Awards for Play of the Year. The film was shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. --Critical reception: -The Lady in the Van received positive reviews, with particular praise being aimed at Smith's acting. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a rating of 93%, based on 120 reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The site's consensus states, "Led by a marvelous performance from Maggie Smith, Lady in the Van wrings poignant, often hilarious insight from its fact-based source material." On Metacritic the film holds a score of 70 out of 100, based on 30 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". "Maggie Smith delivers a compelling performance in The Lady in the Van, as Alan Bennett’s play comes to the big screen 15 years after it premiered at the National Theatre." — Kate Muir, of The Times, following the worldwide premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. "It’s all good fun, it’s just a shame about the attempts to impose drama on what is essentially a comic character study." — Kaleem Aftab, of The Independent, speaking of The Lady in the Van. -Jess Hassenger, of AV Club, gave a "rotten" review, stating that "by design", The Lady in the Van is "flawed" because the film is "supposed to be revealing Bennett, not Shepherd"; a fact that many "will be reminded of before the film’s end". Smith's character is very "commanding" on screen, while Jennings "honorably tend(s) to his character’s quiet, semi-closeted homosexuality". No "matter how many meaningful considerations of mortality" are thrown his way; through the screenplay, Jennings "doesn't have a chance" against Smith. On the contrary, Slant Magazine's Elise Nakhnikian said the film is all about the "fastidious, somewhat timid, and reclusive playwright Alan Bennett", and stated the film's "annoying glibness is neatly summarized" by the line: "In life, going downhill is an uphill job".

-Certainly not so bad but rather moderate for me, it highlights the Ancient Egypt also from a slightly different point the gods of Egypt and not so much the mystical, special effects are also not so what (very) realistic.- CONTRA -Alonso Duralde of TheWrap wrote, "A mishmash of unconvincing visual effects and clumsy writing — not to mention another depiction of ancient Egypt in which the lead roles are almost all played by white folks — Gods of Egypt might have merited a so-bad-it’s-good schadenfreude fanbase had it maintained the unintentional laughs of its first 10 minutes. Instead, it skids into dullness, thus negating the camp classic that it so often verges on becoming." PRO-Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian was less negative on the film: "This is ridiculous. This is offensive. This shouldn’t be, and I’m not going to say otherwise if you can’t bring yourself to buy a ticket for this movie. But if you are on the fence you can always offset your karmic footprint with a donation to a charity, because this movie is a tremendous amount of fun."
