The Last Kingdom10
Apr 25, 2022
Normally I’m not really into series like The Last Kingdom, but back when it first showed up on Netflix I decided to give it a try and was instantly captivated by Uhtred and his story. It’s truly well written with wonderful characters, both real people like King Alfred the Great and fictional characters like Uhtred and his friends. And it conveys beautifully what it was like to live in the Middle Ages.* It inspired me to read up on medieval England and the conflict between the English and the Danes. * It will make you very happy that you live in the 21st Century.

Fargo: Season 310
Apr 26, 2017
Once again Fargo does not disappoint. From its opening scene in Germany until its closing seconds it captures your attention and does not let go. As usual the writing, acting, cinematography, and music are all superb. I'm definitely looking forward to the next nine weeks.

Flesh and Bone: Season 13
Nov 21, 2015
The problem with Flesh and Bone and The Black Swan is that they portray the ballet world in such a dark, dreary, negative light that it seems no one would ever want to be a dancer. And yet thousands of kids around the world study for years to join companies, chasing that holy grail to perhaps become a lead dancer. It's because there's a lot of joy in dancing, and there's also friendship and comraderie among the dancers, as well as competition. Movies like The Turning Point, The Company, Center Stage and The Ballerina, a documentary, capture that world more realistically because they depict the beauty of ballet and the fulfillment and happiness the dancers feel practicing, rehearsing, and performing. Flesh and Bone would be a much better series if it didn't insinuate that only the damaged participate in ballet.

Mad Men: Season 710
May 18, 2015
Now that I've seen the final episode of Mad Men, I feel secure in ranking it as one of the greatest television dramas of all times. The wonderful writing, the compelling characters, the sense of time and place that characterize the universe Matt Weiner created never let me down during the eight years I watched this show. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Transparent: Season 14
Oct 8, 2014
This show started out well with a very good pilot. Unfortunately, it got worse as the story unfolded. It's not that the characters are unlikeable, because many of them are likeable. It's that they behave in the way the screenwriters decide they should for maximum drama effect to shock the audience and not the way human beings really behave.

Rectify: Season 210
Oct 5, 2014
I have to say that I find it absolutely disgraceful that there are no reviews from The New York Times, The Washington Post, or The New Yorker. "Rectify" would seem to me the kind of program that critics from those publications would love. This series is one of the very best American dramas of all time---and also one of the most unappreciated. What a pity.

Silicon Valley: Season 110
May 5, 2014
After last night's (5/4) episode, I am upgrading my score from a 9 to a 10. The only reason not to watch this show is if you don't like to laugh. The writing and the acting make this the funniest comedy I've seen in a very long time.

The Good Wife: Season 510
Nov 2, 2013
Look at the fact that there are only two professional critics reviews here, albeit good ones. The sad truth is that no one except the viewers recognize that The Good Wife is the best drama on tv, and that includes critics darlings like The Walking Dead, Homeland, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones. I guess if people aren't dying in every episode a show can't be any good in their minds. It's time The Good Wife got its due. Spread the word.

Zen: Season 19
Aug 5, 2011
Once I got over the fact that all the Italian characters were speaking English, I fell in love with this show. Zen, his new girl friend, his mother, his co-workers, even his enemies were really great. What a shame if it is true that the BBC canceled it. I guess American networks aren't the only ones that don't give truly excellent programs a real chance to build an audience. Watch it online at **** while you have the chance!
