The Highwaymen6

Overall, the film was fair, but it was interesting to see this subject approached from a different angle, namely one which doesn't glorify the crimes of Bonnie and Clyde as much as other projects have done.

Pretty brave choice for a feature debut. I predict some interesting stuff from this cat in the future.

Well... at least a bunch of people got paychecks. Not much else positive coming out of this one. Some laughs here and there, but few and far between.

Outstanding production design and special effects help to create a rich and inviting universe - to tell less than captivating stories in.

Stunningly beautiful - truly a master class in cinematography. Dreadfully slow for much of it, though.

I'm thinking a discount showing at the theater might have been in order. Some pretty cool visuals, but not a whole lot else that really stands out.

So, my buddy and I went expecting something along the lines of 'Taken on Ice'. How wrong we were. We both have the tendency to laugh at what others may deem inappropriate times, so the first couple of times we chuckled, we assumed that was the case. However, it started to dawn on us that the laughs were intentional and we had stumbled into a dark comedy - a genre I truly enjoy. I'm not going to tell you it was a great movie, but I was pleasantly surprised and entertained.

The Fisher King9
Feb 4, 2019
Gilliam, as a member of the Python troupe, has always been great at funny and quirky, of which this film certainly has its moments. In the Fisher King though, Gilliam shows that he can handle other emotions with equal adeptness and with more subtlety than his previous films. The first 9 min. and 2 secs. of this film are a brilliant setup for what follows and Gilliam doesn't disappoint with the rest of the film. He still manages to get some of his trademark visuals in, but has really seemed to refine his film-making skills with this flick and continues to do so to this day (12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing, Tideland) There are some extraordinary sequences (like the waltz in Grand Central Station) that amaze me when I think about Gilliam's beginnings as the animator and token American of Python (and clapping together those freaking coconuts in The Holy Grail.) As for Williams performance, I have to say that this is one of my favorites. I've always liked him better in the roles where he gets to show some depth in his acting abilities. The comedy is subtle, and the performances have depth, particularly Jeff Bridges - one of the greats, in my opinion.

The visuals are just fantastic at times and feel a bit like watching a surrealist painting come to life, but I was pretty underwhelmed other than that. Tries to be clever and charming but comes off silly and dull. Probably would have been a good candidate back in my college days when we'd light up and watch a visually trippy flick with the sound off and play equally trippy music instead.

It's largely crap, but it's decently made crap. If you're looking for some mindless action adventure to half pay attention to while you're doing the dishes or something, this fits the bill.

First Reformed8

A tragic and beautifully written exploration of spirituality, morality, faith, and the loss of these amidst despair, tragedy, and doubt. A mourning for a world gone mad. Beautiful cinematography and outstanding performances all around.

Paddington 28

Apparently I'm one of the few that didn't find the sequel to be superior to the original. Still a darn fine family film, however. Head and shoulders above 90% of the flicks that fall into that category, actually.

I truly appreciate a family film that can raise a genuine smile through my sometimes cynical side and is good for a few solid chuckles, to boot. Well conceived and brought to life from a technical standpoint and very well written and directed. Almost unbearably adorable.

Slow, quiet, and beautiful like the surroundings it takes place in and not the least bit boring for it. Got me right in the feels a few times, for sure. Ben Foster continues to impress and the kid in this, Thomasin McKenzie, was a delight.

Memoirs of a Geisha6

Beautiful costumes, beautiful sets, beautiful cinematography; truly a gorgeous movie. That being said, it wasn't enough to carry me through two and half hours of a screenplay and characters worthy of a bad romance novel.

If ever there was an argument in favor of smacking a kid, I give you Philippe - the most annoying child on film.

The Stepford Wives7

One of those films that has become ingrained in our culture as allegory. Fair share of 70s camp but it's a creepy and enjoyable watch. Fun fact: two of the women in this movie played Ginger Grant from Gilligan's Island. Tina Louise played the role in the initial television series and Judith Baldwin took over the role in the made-for-television movies a decade later.

If you're going to make a propaganda movie, at least make a decent propaganda movie. Clearly directed at the misinformed mass of **** that already buy into this sort of delusional garbage.
