Final Fantasy VII Remake0

If Square Enix were honest about what this was, I would have been fine with its existence. I would not have bought it though. Overall, this game was a scam, simple and clean (wink wink). It's not a remake at all as it was marketed, but a sequel/soft reboot in disguise. "Faithful to the original" MY A$$. And no, I'm not talking about small changes, expanded backstories or the **** like "tH3 gAMe iS OnLY MIdGaR sO It'S UnFiNISheD HURR DHURR". I'm talking about MAJOR alterations that inevitably change the plot for the absolute worst, lowest common denominator anime nonsense. I will NEVER EVER trust Square Enix again, this was the straw that broke the camel's back. And most of all, I'll steer clear of anything that has the names Nojima, Toriyama and Nomura on it. The vote assigned is because, again, we've been scammed, otherwise the game is dumb in the plot department, but otherwise pretty solid. PROS + The combat system is the best one since FFX, imho. I still prefer turn-based combat, but this one is actually very good, allowing to strategize and being pretty deep. + The graphics are mostly amazing. + I still prefer the original OST, but the new soundtrack is excellent too, especially factoring the fact it adapts to the action on screen. + I have (almost) no problems with the plot of the game up until the ending. CONS - Padding. - Some really bad textures and NPC models. - Sidequests are BAAAAAAAD, mostly consisting of go from A to B, then from B to C, then from C to A. - The whole ending. I feel like all the OG FF7 needed was a new coat of paint to make it more palatable to newer generations of players: its story could have been fleshed out more and it looks like it would have worked judging by how they handled the OG story bits in this remake up until the ending. This is just a bait and switch BETRAYAL. Last time an ending made me hate a whole game was Mass Effect 3. This is worse than that. That said, imma go play the OG FF7 again with retranslation and remako mods: the only way to experience the original masterpiece of a story in a fresh and new way.

Good adventure game, bad Monkey Island game. Plot holes hurt my soul. Monkey Kombat hurts me physically.

Assassin's Creed III6

The game is very glitchy (floating NPCs, missions that can't be completed...) even after the last official patch. The game itself isn't too far from the previous AC episodes and the ONLY breath of fresh air comes from the sea battles/sections. The secondary quests are more or less "go there and press a button", almost every single one of them. The plot is average, the ending is intriguing, but not very well fleshed out.

Metroid: Samus Returns8
Nov 15, 2018
The game is awesome but it has some little flaws that in my eyes prevent it from being a masterpiece. Overall, the gameplay is great, level design is top notch, presentation is great. This is a solid entry in the Metroid series. If you want to know if you should buy this game: buy it. It's worth every cent. Now, the nitpicky cons: - Movement is mapped to the circle pad and while Samus is responsive, this can sometimes create problems, since the circle pad doesn't have the accuracy of a d-pad. The option to choose between the circle and d-pad would have been appreciated (you could always use the circle pad for the 360 aiming, even using the d-pad to move). - Some of the controls are on the touch screen and while this isn't a problem during most of the game, executing some of the manouvers (i.e. sometimes during the extra items hunt) can be a problem when you're required to act fast. I've died multiple times on a certain boss only because I couldn't switch my beams quick enough. I've played the game on a New 3DS XL and it doesn't even take advantage of the extra shoulder buttons. - The counter mechanic crushes the pace in the beginning of the game. This is certainly a design decision to make you feel stronger in the latter half (spoiler: it does), but the mechanic itself forces you to stop every movement to counter an attack (well, you can move and counter, but I don't have this kind of reflexes, since the enemies rush you the moment they see you), if you don't have a powerful enough beam to plow through any enemy. It looks cool though. Also, the mechanic never feels like a QTE (you have to actually shoot after performing the counter and you can choose your ammunition). In the end, I wouldn't remove it from the game, but I wouldn't make the enemies react so fast to your presence, rushing you the moment they see you every single time (sometimes even from off screen). - Gone are all the skill based moves like they were in the old 2D games. The wall-jump is a joke to pull off, there's no shinespark and bomb jumping feels much, MUCH easier too. - While the aeon pulse is optional, it seriously destroys any sense of discovery and a-ah moment. Sure, you could NOT use it, but I would have preferred the option to turn this particular feature off. It doesn't serve any gameplay reason and it's there only to ease your journey. Also, the aeon bar recharges way too easily and this encourages the player to spam the ability and the pulse shows way too much of the map. Bringing up AM2R (excellent fan remake of Metroid 2), in that the game signalled extremely well hidden passages and other hidden alcoves, much better than in any other 2D Metroid game, without any need for a feature like the aeon pulse. Inthis remake, without the pulse it's go bomb everything, because rarely the bombable stuff is signaled in any meaningful, unintrusive way. In short: I want Metroid to subtly catch my eye and to make me wonder if something might be behind that slightly weird block. I don't want it to go: EHY BOMB THERE YOU DUMB DUMB. - Stuff locked behind amiibos: most of it is totally optional, but locking the Fusion Difficulty behing a plastic, day-one DLC was a d-ick move by Nintendo. - Warning: serious nitpicking! The Lower Brinstar music... why? Lower Brinstar is on a whole other planet! It's fanservice and I didn't like it (the fanservice, not the music). And that's it. Fix this stuff in the next game (because there will be another 2D Metroid game during my lifetime, right NINTENDO?!) and you'll have a masterpiece deserving a 9 or even a 10. This time, I'd give the game a 8,5, but Metacritic doesn't like half marks, so it's an 8.

Sonic Mania9

Finally a classic Sonic game wich builds upon the classic trilogy and Sonic CD and results in something both fresh and nostalgic. Thank goodness for Christian Whitehead and kudos to SEGA for letting a passionate and talented fan create the best 2D Sonic game in ages! SEGA still does what Nintendon't. 9 out of 10 because there are small issues that can be ironed out, mostly caused by sticking to the classic Sonic design philosophy. I.e. sometimes you still crash into enemies because of the ridiculous speed or sometimes the backgroung and foreground elements are kinda confusing... nitpicky stuff.

Silent Hill: Downpour4
Aug 25, 2016
Graphics are meh. Soundtrack is meh. The plot makes no sense. The combat is clunky. Monsters are uninspired. There are several technical issues such as framerate drops and freezing. The save system is awful. Its way of being original is to copy (badly) Silent Hill 2. Still, it's one of the best games post Silent Hill 4.

Broken Age8
May 3, 2015
This is NOT a bad game, in fact it's one of the best graphic adventures I've played recently. The problem here is that it is not the groundbreaking masterpiece fans of Grim Fandango and other old glories were waiting for. It is funny, witty, entertaining and hard enough for newcomers to the genre (a little bit too much on the easy side for veterans, especially the first half). Puzzles are fun and well done (especially near the end of the game). The score and the art are amazing, the game is trurly a joy to look at and listen to. Voice acting is excellent and the game features people like Jack Black, Will Wheaton and Elijah Wood. However, there are flaws. Some characters are a little "glossed over". They come and go very quickly in Act 1 and when they return in Act 2, you basically won't talk to them after the first dialogue. The character played by Jack Black is the best example: funny, interesting and full of potential "wasted" in 2 dialogues and 1 puzzle. Despite the development time, the game offers a little selection of settings (screens) compared to the average old G.A. (what you see in Act 1 is basically what you'll get in Act 2 along with a handful of new locations). Also, the ending feels rushed and generic. I was truly disappointed by it because it sort of gives closure to everything in the lazyest way possible (you'll see) and abrupts the game in a point where I was excited to see what was coming next (again, you'll see). I won't mention backtracking as a flaw because it is inevitable in some sort of way in a G.A. I think it is only more evident here because of the restricted number of screens. For the record: I am not a backer, but I've watched the Making of documentary on Youtube. I know what Double Fine has been through while making this game, but that is not an excuse for its shortcomings. I give Broken Age an 8/10 that would have been a 7.5/10 if it weren't for the art and the music. PROS + Art style + Voice acting + Orchestral score + Puzzles are hard enough for newcomers to the genre + Classic Tim Schafer dialogues CONS - Puzzles are fairly easy for veterans of the genre - Some NPCs could have been used more - Very few screens - The ending feels generic and rushed

Dragon Quest III9

The game is great, especially considering its original release date. It allows deep customization of every character and lets you select your companions from the start: you can choose class, stats and personalities for each one of them (including your main character). The combat system is similar yet deeper than the one in DQ1 and DQ2 and has a customizable "auto-battle" feature for grinding (wich is great). Also, this game is HUGE. The only problem is that this port to iOS and Android (as the ports of DQ1 and DQ2) have worse graphics than the SNES remakes (but DQ3 is the better one in this regard). Also, the SNES remake had an introductive sequence which is missing in this version. The new orchestral score is great, though. I would recommend this game only to every RPG enthusiast and DQ fan. Also, message to Square-Enix: it would be great to have this game packaged alongside DQ1 and DQ2 and released on a physical support for an handheld console (3DS, anyone?).

The game is fine and old school. It's an important piece of videogaming history. The only problem is that this port to iOS and Android (as the ports of DQ2 and DQ3) have worse graphics than the SNES remakes. The new orchestral score is great, though. DQ2 is much bigger and more complex than its predecessor. I would recommend this game only to hardcore fans of the series and "videogaming archeologists". I am kinda both and I had a blast.

Okami HD10
Sep 4, 2014
Do you want to know if you should buy Okami? Buy it. Now. Seriously, go. The art direction is stellar with its "ancient japanese painting" style and the "stages" are beautiful, varied and imaginative. The gameplay is solid and offers a lot of possibilities with its "brush mode", wich allows you to do all sort of things- making the Sun rise, slashing something in two, making trees bloom, making wind blow... The plot is fairly simple but surelty it's not bad and the characters range from epic to cute to hilarious. The music is fantastic if you dig its "ancient japanese music" style. The game is also long and offers challenges, mini-games and collectibles. The only problem is that it's a bit too on the easy side. Oh, and the game hasn't been dubbed, so if you don't like reading, well... it's one of those games.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West7
Sep 4, 2014
I thought this game would have been a lot better due to the enthusiastic reviews I read. Truth is it's not bad at all, but could have been better. I don't mind its linearity, but I found its combat system a bit unappealing (I barely used some of the moves I unlocked through the game, except in the sections that required to do so) and its plot borderline between shallow and intriguing. It's not one of those games that spoon feed every plot element and it requires you to keep attention to details, every once in a while, but this is not a problem. The problem is that the ending comes and goes at light speed. I understand that maybe the developers wanted to leave it open to interpretation (or they expected to make a sequel), but the game ends almost abruptly after the final boss. And by the way, boss fights are VERY underwhelming and way too easy. The art direction is stellar, though. Awesome, lush environments and a lot of inventive. Overall it's not a bad game, as I already mentioned, but it could have been better.
