Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective9
Jan 26, 2012
Hands down, one of the best games on DS. Ghost Trick is completely brilliant from start to finish- with great puzzles, fantastic characters, an engaging story and a truly awesome ending. Each character is fully realised, and everyone has a part to play in this stellar tale. The puzzles can be a bit hit and miss occassionally, but you'll forgive it, if only because it's so utterly likeable.

Mass Effect 210
Jan 26, 2012
Mass Effect was...pretty good. But the level design and planet exploration sections were pure dump, and so BioWare had something to improve on. So they did. And they improved everything else as well, just for good measure. ME2 is a fantastic tale, using the traditional Dirty Dozen formulae and making it work. Each character is brilliantly realised, each location fullly immersive, each battle exciting and frantic. ME2 has only one flaw, which is the weak shooting. Guns just don't feel good, and as solid as other aspects of the combat are, the shooting just ain't up to scratch. But that's a minor complaint really, because ME2 is, in many ways, amazing.

Gears of War 3: RAAM's Shadow8
Jan 26, 2012
Raam's Shadow is mostly Gears at it's best. Tight, gripping firefights, without any of that set-piece nonsense. At it's worst, you are General RAAM, locust general and fleeting novelty. Shredding COG's is at first quite fun, and his brutal executions are gratifyingly satisfying, but the funs over in about 10 minutes, and these bits drag on and on. The sections where you play as the COG are better, partly thanks to level design, prtly thanks to super solid shooting. Raam's Shadow is a bit pricey, but worth getting. It's about 3 hours long, but it's a great 3 hours.

Gears of War 39
Dec 30, 2011
I absolutely love this game. The shooting is fantastic, it has a satisfying amount of gore and the guns just feel great. Story wise it's fairly weak, but the moment to moment story telling is strong. The multiplayer and horde modes are much better now, but the new Beast mode doesn't quite feel polished enough. Overall though, this is a fantastic **** cracking single and multi player modes mean this is well worth getting.

Batman: Arkham City10
Dec 30, 2011
Arkham City has a lot of pressure to deliver, as Batman: Arkham Asylum was one of the best games of the generation. And in almost every way, Arkham City delivers. Pretty much every villain ever, lots of wonderful new toys, genius Predator maps. In fact, once you really get into Arkham City, there's no returning to Arkham Asylum. You get so good with these new tools, AA's Batman feels ill-suited to the job. The story isn't quite as tight as Asylum's however, with villains in their many not fulfilling their potential. The ending is also fairly weak besides the very last gasp: a shocker that changes Batman himself. But, overall Arkham City is a super sequel, and improves on the previous game in almost every way.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim10
Dec 22, 2011
Skyrim is an amazing, jaw-droppingly vast RPG, with spells, swords, axes, quests and monsters galore. It isn't perfect (but what is?) thanks to repeated phrases and voice actors. And like all Bethesda game, it's got a crap-ton of glitches. BUT, Skyrim is very, very big, and it's only matched by it's quality. A trip down a forest with a talking dog. A quest reminiscent of The Hangover. Epic Dark Brotherhood questlines. Skyrim packs a lifetime of content into one game-giving astonishing value for money. The Xbox 360 game of the year.

Saints Row: The Third9
Nov 30, 2011
Saints Row: The Third succeeds at one thing: sheer fun. It's not as polished or as good as GTA IV, but it's significantly more zany. Fighter jets, apocofists, **** bats, cyber demons, hover bikes-it's ridiculously over the top stuff, but it's definately enjoyable. The main campaign is littered with filler-missions, but the core missions themselves are brilliantly mad yet enjoyable shootouts. The games take on Gears Of Wars Horde mode, titled **** Mode, is a load of crap, but it;'s a funny load of crap. It's retains the generally lack of sanity found in the main game, but focuses on the simple but fairly weak shooting. All in all, it's a more polished Saints Row 2, with loads more stuff, prettier graphics, and a laser firing fighter jet. **** you can forgive it's flaws.

Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive!8
Nov 30, 2011
The exploration? Weaksauce. Platforming? A fiddly affair, but it does make use of the touch screen. Creation? Excellent. Nabbing other peoples creations via QR codes? The real meat of the game. For just over a fiver, you can sort of forgive it's shortcomings, but when it has such potential in the character creation system, all is forgiven. Well, almost.

Minecraft10
Nov 30, 2011
Originally, Minecraft didn't deserve the criticisms thrown at it. 'Lame graphics'-nah. There delightfully retro, and look great in this decidedly modern world. But, after the game FINALLY got out of beta, it's now been criticised of not fulfilling it's enourmous potential. I'd argue it's done a lot-massive, devoted community, multiple biomes, tons of blocks. This isn't the end of Minecraft though. It will continue to be updated. Improved. Refined. It rocks all kinds of awesome now, but in the future, it will be unstopable. Er, just don't hold your breath.

Mario Sports Mix6
Oct 18, 2011
Mario Sports Mix is just, just above average. It's fairly fun, and quite mad, but it's fairly fiddly, and not a patch on Mario Karts multiplayer thrills and spills. The unlocking system is broken too, but one redeeming feature is the awesome Square Enix cast, like the Cactuar and the Mages. Now, this is me being a bit of a fanboy, but Sports Mix saves itself from a lowly 5 just by having these guys. Controversial? Damn straight.

Forza Motorsport 410
Oct 18, 2011
Forza 3 was perfect. Note: was. Forza Motorsport 3 appeared to be the end of the Racing genre, the pinnacle of automative entertainment, and was so complete Forza 4 seemed redundant. But it isn't. Forza 4 does everything Forza 3 did, only better, and a load of other stuff too. Multiplayer has been revamped, Career is stronger, more cars, the amazing Autovista and the joys of Free Play. There are only two problems, and there fairly minor. The Top Gear content is a little light, it seems only satisfactory, but nothing more. Secondly, the difficulty system is poorly balanced. The better you do, the harder the races get. Eventually, the other cars become very aggressive and very fast, making races a tedious game of dodgems, Losing races makes the AI easier, but no game should make you deliberatley lose, that's a design flaw. But, beside these ****, Forza offers the ultimate automative videogame experience. Again, and better than ever.

Deadly Creatures6
Sep 2, 2011
Deadly Creatures, is certainly trying to be different, making youm play as a spider and a scorpion is a novel enough twist, and the world is well realised. But, underneath this, DC is just an average beat 'em up with clunky-ish platofrming, just one that does something different, which allows it to stand out against samey movie tie-ins. And, for the lower price since it's fairly old now, it's worth picking up for a game-starved Wii-owner.

Borderlands8
Aug 25, 2011
Borderlands is great. Really great. But it contains bullet sponges. Lots of them. These enemies soak up a lot of bullets, even if your using a ROCKET LAUNCHER. But that's fine, because it's a first person loot 'em up, and that's how they should work....right? Right. Borderlands does also feature more weapons than any other game ever, but that's not what keeps you playing. Apart from it being nectar to loot 'em up fans, the world is engaging and brilliantly created, and the cel-shaded styling is used to great effect. The constant tease of a new, more badass weapon (or grenade, or power up, or shield) is incentive enough to stay with Borderlands, which is all it ever needed to do anyway.

Left 4 Dead 29
Jul 4, 2011
For a long while, Team Fortress 2 was my favourite Live game, with it's varied character classes and Pixar-esque graphical style. The along came Left 4 Dead 2. Left 4 Dead 2 offers TF2 style variety, and then some. Taking the class-based formulae and filling it with BRAAAAAAAAIIIIIINNNNNSSSS, L4D2 is a near-perfect multiplayer game, that any self respecting game should play. It's a really solid shooter, firstly, as playing as the survivors is just as fun as being the zombies, thanks to fun weapons and grenades. And then I move on to the zombies themselves, who play the more tactical game. Survivors cling together to survive, while the zombies get to choose crafty spawn points to suit their classes particular skills. The Boomer, a puking, fat zombie that can cause a huge hoard of common infected to attack the survivors, either by puking on them or exploded on them. There's also the Spitter, who throws a great big acid patch onto the floor, damaging the survivors and, if your particularly crafty, netting you a few Achievements. There's also the Smoker and Hunter, the former dragging survivors to there death with his huge tongue, while the latter climbs onto rooftops before leaping onto survivors and ripping them to pieces. The Charger and the Tank are sort of similar, as the Charger is a hulking brute who grabs survivors and pummels them, while the Tank just generally throws rocks and smacks survivors into oblivion. The last playable Infected is the Jockey, who jumps onto survivors and drives them into the zombies, causing said survivor to become a mound of flesh and blood. The single player campaign is also enjoyable enough, but it's far superior in co-op, with all it's zombie shooting, grenade throwing, with stalking shenanigans. Ah yes, the Witch. The Witch is a fast, powerful Infected who if you startle will kill you or knock you down, and then you will have to rely on your fellow survivors to help you. With is the point of the game really-teamwork. It forces you to work with your friends for a truly great survival-based multiplayer game, whilst being both addictive and satisfying.

Forza Motorsport 310
Jul 4, 2011
Quite possibly the last word on racing games, Forza 3 is pretty, massive and a joy to control. Each car handles with unparalled precision, from the Lamborghinis to the Fords. Super fast supercars actually feel like supercars, and even the slower, weaker cars are incredibly fun. And this is Forza 3's greatest strength-there are no rubbish cars. There all fun, even the crap cars are as satisfying as the insanely fast Bugatti Veyron. Of course, it helps that the graphics are incredibly good too, and yet still manages to run along smoothly at 60fps. Another big area of Forza, revealing itself after release, is the fantastic ability for user created content. You can paint cars, create designs, upgrade your cars- all of which backed up by an incredibly strong user base, meaning Forza could last forever. But it won't obviously, as Forza 4 is just around the corner, but it's going to have one hell of a hard time topping this masterful racer.

The Orange Box10
Jun 21, 2011
The best game on Xbox, bar none. The Orange Box has 5 truly brilliant games on one disc. Team Fortress 2 is a bloody, shouty shooter that's only flaw is it's small fan-base. With more support, it could be amazing. The three Half Life games are an example of how to make shooters constantly fun, always throwing around new ideas, always being supremely playable. Finally, Portal is a brand new (though at the time of writing, Portal 2 has been released) puzzle shooter that unique, yet fits in with the Half Life mythology. It's truly mind bending and simply unmissable. And, as is The Orange Box itself. A collection of five unmissable games in one unbeatable package. Get it!

Pilotwings Resort7
Jun 18, 2011
This game is really, really short. I love the lovely graphics, perfect controls and entertaining missions. But all of this doesn't hide the fact that Resort has nothing on Pilotwings 64, with it's four expansive locations. Resort has one, tiny island without much to do. And a nasty time limit. If you get into it, Resort is a fun flight sim, if brief.

Crackdown 27
May 20, 2011
I expected a lot more from Crackdown 2. I expected a lot more introduced from Crackdown, first and foremost. Crackdown 2 doesn't do much new, but it makes everything from Crackdown more AWESOME. You'll love it even more if you haven't played Crackdown as well. Still, like I said previously, Crackdown 2 does make everything more AWESOME. In keys to the City mode, you can be a super powered, invincible, tank driving, zombie spawning GOD. It is incredibly fun, and fairly big, but it's not exactly clever. You'll have fun in Crackdown 2, but it could have been so much more.

Portal 210
May 20, 2011
There's only one big flaw in Portal 2. ONE. That's it. No challenge rooms. But, by the time you've gotten through the super enjoyable and fairly long single player, then beaten the even harder co-op, you might not care. I won't spoil any surprises in Portal 2, everything I spoil is a glorious surprise fuelled with invention and wit taken away from you. Simply put, the single player adventure is completely brilliant, and the co-op is too. Easily 20+hrs of portal firing, robot flinging, turret killing brilliance.

May 20, 2011
Finally, after many weak attempts, they've nailed what makes Mortal Kombat so brutally fantastic. GORE! Mortal Kombat may not be a true tournament fighter, but thats not really the point anyway. New Super Mario Bros.9
Oct 5, 2010
For one of the DS's earlier games, this still holds up very well, as it's only about 4 years old. It's a terrific platformer, filled with fun and innovation, and with plenty of throughbacks to Mario history. One of the best game on DS, and even one of the best games of 2006. This stands as what Mario games are: pure, undiluted downright fun.

Dead Rising9
Sep 6, 2010
While Dead Rising isn't perfect, the story should have been optional, as it was generic and frustrating at times, the core gameplay-going round a shopping mall whilt murdering zombies, is a real treat and a lot of fun. There are countless ways too off the fiends, smashing a plant pot over there heads, running them through with a chainsaw- the ace katana. The endless possibilities make it essential.A must-have.

Red Steel 28
Sep 6, 2010
The best thing about this game is the top-drawer combat. Precise motion control's mean thanks to the accuracy, even without the gore, Red Steel 2 is a brutal game. The soundtrack is brilliant too, atmospheric Western tunes and some lovely cel-shaded graphics. While the rest of it is't particularl smart, generic enemies and generic, but well done, areas. One of the finest FPS's on Wii, and one of the finest combat systems too.

Call of Duty: World at War7
Sep 6, 2010
While lacking some of the better features of the 360/PS3 versions, it still features a surprisingly good single player, with brilliant online play. Yes, the Wii version is inferior, but it's still a great FPS, if not as good as other first person games on Wii, like Red Steel 2 and Metroid Prime 3. A really fun and addictive game, but not as good as the other versions.

For how cheap it is now, EBA is possibly worth getting, but it's extremely short with just over 10 songs. While unique and features short amounts of fun, it would be much better with twice as many songs.

A genuinely good on-rails shooter. Fantastic fun, with a certain suspenseful atmosphere that (though not as good as Resident Evil 4) is quite eerie, with certain moments in the game that are a real blast. If you want Resi on Wii, get Resi 4, but for Resident Evil fans it's nearly essential. WIth some great graphics too.

Aug 25, 2010
While hugely ambitious, full of spaceship parts and, well, spaceships, Infinite Space is tehcnically fine and a cracking RPG. But it does seem to lack a certain spark that keeps you wanting more, as if it's somehow empty, like space itself. Not the case really, as it's packed with content.

In a word-bonkers. Not just a game maker, but the chance to take the mick out of anyone (provided your stylus skills are up to it) with plenty of modes and downloads to keep you playing. Bored on a train/bus/car? Make a game where said train/bus/car/U.F.O flies through planets, zapping aliens and anyone who gets on your nerves. Dangerously addictive, too.

Aug 25, 2010
Completely useless if you arn't a Pokemon lunatic and have Diamond/ Pearl, but since when did non-Pokemon fans buy D/P. Though while it's a small update, it's a crackingly good update, with the new Battle Frontier and the rather clever Distortion World. Pokemon die-hards are used to only subtle remakes, and this, unfortunately, is yet another subtle one, but lets you enjoy that adventure again, but slightly different from last time.

Completely bonkers, in a really cool way. While there are a few flaws, the combat is very satisfying, the bosses hilarious and memorable and the swear words pumping out faster than a penguin on a jet ski. Through all the ****'s, ****'s and ****heads, theres a ace, fun and mad game.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness5
Aug 25, 2010
It gets three of that 5 for the pretty good storyline, and some excellent music. Aside from that though, it's a boring game, but will at least last you through the main story, with little replay value beyond that. Very likeable at first, but after completion the dungeon crawling wears thin.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team6
Aug 25, 2010
Though it offers much to please die-hard Pokemon fans, your much better off with the GBA version, as this didn't need to be on DS. Theres some nice sprite work here, and fairly satisfying dungeon crawling, but when it gets so boring so fast...youre going to run back to the superior games, that being the main series.

I find it impossible not to fall in love with Okami, the Wii is a perfect fit for the celestial brush, with a unique and splendid character design, with rich, vibrant enviroments and a massive game with plenty of content to un-earth. Awesome graphics, unqiue gameplay- whats not to like?

While the gameplay, dissapointingly, remains virtually unchanged throughout the game, it is a very good game, so ou won't really mind. One of the better Wii games, it's very innovative to begin with, but the un varied locations bore, the fantastic and, ahem, colourful gameplay shines through.

While it throws you in the dark with virtually no idea whats going one, when you get something right in Toribash, it's immenesly staisfying. The problem being it shouldn't be staisfying- they should have had way more and better tutorials, and the complex battle system doesn't help. Bomberman Land Touch!8
Aug 23, 2010
Unlike several other Bomberman games, like the dreadful Bomberman Story for example, this has a pretty good single player, with the dangerously addictive multiplayer as well. While not one of the best DS games, it is a good one and worth picking up, much Bomberman-multiplayer related fun to be had, but the friendless can always play against the CPU, or have a crack at the single player game.

The Golden Compass2
Aug 23, 2010
While some elements are half decent- switching to a painfully low amount of characters with your helper is a better inclusion to the game, its terrible graphics, boring gameplay and complete lack of character makes this one to stay clear of, while there are many good DS games, this is another awful licenced DS game, and one of few games I would only buy for a really low price, if only to sell it for a higher one. Succeeds in offering something life draining- truly awful.

Easily my favourite DS game, Dragon Quest IX is top RPG goodness, with some of the best graphics on DS. While the battle system is old hat, the levels of customisation and excellent storyline make fr a life consuming RPG, and probably the best game on DS. If you get one DS game, make it this one.

Aug 23, 2010
While it's certainly a lot of fun, I even would claim it as a '2D Mario Galaxy', it has several annoying flaws, and after re-thinking said claim, I realised how perfect Mario's 3D outings where, compared to this. It is however a very good, and downright fun Wii game, with some technically brilliant level design, and some graphics worthy of the Wii. If it were not for some flaws, we could have had the '2D Mario Galaxy' that the Wii really needs.

**** flaws and borked controls keep this from being truly outstanding, but as a 8/10 game, it's one of the better 8/10 games. It's premise is brilliant, write anything, solve everything. Though this pretty much is true, summoning anything is an awesome prospect, a better line would be 'write anything, solve almost everything if it wasn't for several flaws'. Still one of the best DS games, if you can put up with dodgy control schemes.

While the single player is dissapointing, it's very un ambitous and has few good ideas, the multiplayer is a as much fun as any Mario title. While I dislike Mario Kart Wii, I still respect it as a great racing game, but could have benefited from when previous Mario Kart games went right, namely character specific karts, items and the coin system from Super Mario Kart. While it seems to lack the soul of Mario Kart DS, it is solid multiplayer fun, and pretty good in single player too. Packed with tracks, characters and items- one good game

Even saying that, MArio Kart DS is packed with content, featuring 32 tracks and a decent amount of characters. With sme smooth and solid grpahics for DS, this is a definitive racing experience, and has a lot more soul than the Wii version. With another player, the rel fun begins, and the spirit of Mario Kar comes alive- pure multiplayer fun.
