Alita: Battle Angel7

I liked it a lot more than I expected, going in with low low expectaitons. Fun if don't think too much about the overall plot and rack your brains too much - there are pieces that are well thought out (the world in general) and things that are rushed through (romance) and some predictable cliffhanger elements (hoping for a sequel).

Blade Runner 20498

It is a technical masterpiece and I cant fault the direction. The script however introduces a lot of elements that are never explored and tied up - and the abrupt ending makes me wonder if this was a directors cut with a lot of unexplored stuff or if it needs a directors cut with 2 more hours of content that will explore all the elements. I wish more time was spent on character development outside of Gosling as well. The pacing and sense of urgency also felt off despite the gravity of what was happening.

Excellent. One of the more original Sci-Fi / Fi/ Thriller movies to come out recently. Handles tonal shifts really well and the acting was really good. Maybe the end and resolution was a bit sudden and left a bit to be desired. But otherwise, really enjoyed it - it's something totally different from what youre used to. If you enjoyed Cloverfield Lane, you'll like this.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story7

Does a lot of things right, and some crtical ones wrong. The biggest negatives 1) score and music editing (timing of music with whats happening on screen is completely offputting and doesnt help in setting the tone
2) first half introductions and character motivations were eehhh.
3) inspiration speeches from people we just met 4) cgi tarkin,(other character from new hope) and vaders voice.
5) didnt' really care for the characters apart from the main trio (madds included). Positives
the second half .. and the environmental/battle/ship graphics- wow. just wow. see this in imax if possible just for the visuals. also, the nice connection at the end to the new hope. all in all id have given this an 8.5 if it had been scored well . still, heaps better than VII

Fun and funny second half cant save an overlong and bloated first half which doesnt serve to advance the story or character backgrounds in anyway. My favourite would have to be Walton Goggins as the new Sheriff - who probably caused most of the audience laughs in my screening. Also they use the N word so much it gets treated like the F word by the end of the movie (ie. inconsequential and not so full of hate ... just saying ;) )

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens3

Shocker. Essentially a mashup of various parts of the 6 movies preceding it. As a standalone sci film, I'd give it a 6 for a Guardians knockoff ; as a continuation of the Star Wars saga i'd give it a 3. As my mum who watched it with me said, ' i have no idea why they were fighting but the effects were nice in 3d' . Plagued by woeful dialogue and characters appearing out of nowhere for pure Deus Ex convenience. -Bad guys are absolutely tame and the one truly horrible event in the movie is ignored immediately after. - -Everyone becomes best friends within a few minutes of meeting each other. -The force and fighting is can be learned within a few hours after you heard of its existence. -droids can power up and down based on the timing of the plot for .. reasons. (see it to understand) -the score was largely generic and unmemorable apart from a few john willams cues. nothing original again. the plus side is rey and finn (actors) are good.. theyre just forced with a terrible script that regresses the series and wastes a glorious opportunity of expanding the SW universe and plot.

Fun, enjoyable, to the point and also among the more believable plots of the summer (seriously, it makes sense once you watch the whole thing). The special fx suffer towards the very end but visually it's solid otherwise. Dialogue is kept simple and the plot twist is again (surprisingly) believable. The supporting cast add to the fun and the rock embodies the conflicted hero/legend/mercenary character pretty well. Went for the action, wasn't dissappointed- would have liked to see the supporting cast fleshed out but that would extend the running time so maybe it was a marketing decision. Hopefully international box office sales warrant a sequel. I fear too many people won't give this a chance because of the Brett Ratner tag in the United States. All in all it's a simple , fun and to the point movie without any needless abuse of sexuality or unbelievable plot holes (not glaring ones anyway). Go support the Rock if you're his fan too!
