Impressive. Everything the creators of this show actually created themselves, they messed up. Only the things they inherited, mostly some visual designs, they succeeded at. But that is not much of an achievement. The characters are dumb as rocks, and just as equally likeable as said rocks. The worldbuilding is pathetic. The society, that is established to feature an education system that furthers physical fitness, combat skills and rhetoric, seemed to produce mostly wimpy idiots who neither know how to think, not how to speak. Let alone fight. And pretty much ALL the designs that were not directly copied from the games, do not match the games. The architecture mostly doesn't, nor does the interior design. Always apart from that single item in every room that does fit, but only because it is meant to be a specific nostalgia trigger. This is a memberberry-milkshake. Only instead of milk, they used ****. And they used only half the amount of memberberries that the recipe suggested.

And the Mandalorians are just horrible idiots, but that is nothing new by now. They can't really fight, their weapons are pretty much all useless against almost anything, they have no knowledge of tactics… None of this feels like Star Wars anymore and it is not a lot of fun watching one band of bumbling buffoons fighting against the medicated elite from the short bus.

I liked some of the characters and the visuals were good, but there is one big elephant with a cyberexo problem in the room: It is all meaningless. It is made meaningless by itself, because the writing is so all over the place and the things that happen so absurdly overpowered and incomprehensible, that everything that happens is merely arbitrary. Does someone die? Does something explode? Who knows? You get to see it when it happens. It has nothing to do with physics or with established laws. The main character is even faster than light. Really. But then again... not really. But then again, really. The writes just made a huge mess and broke their own worldbuilding over and over and over again. It could have been so much more.

Nobody would respect him and he'd have to work with the saddest losers imaginable. None of his abilities would work until he had reached certain leveling thresholds and he'd only be as smart and as badass as the player managed to portray him. So... If you do not know ANYTHING at all about history, economics, science, politics, psychology and war, this show may be enjoyable to you. If this is not the case it is very unlikely that you will find this watchable. The entire setup is implausible and sloppily written and pretty much nothing makes sense. The German translations of English signs are almost all wrong and that spells disaster for such a production. Not because the actual text would matter, but because it is a clear sign of amateurish work and producers who don't care about their own products. Then there is the swastikas and the constant use of the "****" term. **** did not call everything they did and owned "****" and they certainly did not adorn EVERYTHING with swastikas. The show however seems to think that it has to maximize the **** out of even a phonebooth. "Greater **** Reich" is about as dumb as it comes. **** is short for Nationalsozialismus, national socialism, but I am sure the creators of this show do not know that. Plausible names would have been "Deutsch-Amerika", "Amerikanische Staaten von Großdeutschland", or something else along the lines. "Größeres **** Reich"? No, not even close. That is as if an American occupation somewhere else would call itself "Embiggened Ammie Union". The worst thing however is that they could not even get the concept of an occupied state right. On one hand they present everything as **** and tyrannical, but then they completely fail to have all the things that such systems do. Freedom of travel?! Oh, please. How infantile. No tyrannical system EVER in the entire history of mankind allowed subjugated people freedom of travel. Not even it's own citizens had such freedom. Not in the Soviet Union and not in **** Germany. Such things matter. Not every piece of it all the time, but for the eventual product. The behavior of the characters is even worse. If my system got murdered literally a few meters away from me, I could not even imagine reacting like the woman in the show did. Also for the amount of brainwashing that most of the characters seem to have absorbed, there was simply never enough time between 1947 and 1962. Mere 15 years are not enough to brainwash an entire nation. Sloppy, incorrect, implausible, incredible, badly written. The book is actually better but it is a child of it's time. It doesn't help much that the reality portrayed in the setting is factually a "false" reality. Even false realities need to make sense within themselves.

This series has one of the most horrid narratives I have seen in a long time. Pretty much every dramatical device that gets used is applied in the most amateur way. Foreshadowing is not foreshadowing, if it is slapped in the viewers face in chronological order and then, within the very same episode, it is actually revisited to make sure that nobody could possibly overlook anything. It implies that the viewers are utterly stupid, which is demeaning. On top of that, the way the main character acts and allegedly thinks is anachronistic towards and in direct conflict with her own background. Choice of location is very nice on the other hand, as is costume design. Unfortunately that does not make up for all the flaws this series is seriously burdened with.

Feb 5, 2014
This series has almost everything. It has good actors, a solid props department, good locations, camera, music and quite decent special effects. What it does not have is good writing. From only a few episodes in you can tell that the series has no soul whatsoever. Every episode is on it's own, which is very bad for any science-fiction or fantasy series, because it erodes any illusion that it takes place inside a fictional world. Instead of establishing that world, futuristic and fictional technologies are thrown in as one-shot plot instruments, discarded right after single use. Eventually it is just an above average cop show, but instead of getting something out of it's science fiction environment it gets watered down by it. If even the weirdest conclusions and circumstances just get made up on the basis on "some singular weird-tech could do that perhaps" nothing really matters. What makes it all worse is that the authors have absolutely no understanding of how technology works, how it permeates our every day lives and how people interact with it. At its core, the series is surprisingly technophobic and futurephobic, which leaves a very strange impression for a near-future science fiction series. I enjoy watching it, but only as long as I do so. As soon as I start thinking about it it pains me, which is never a good sign. Good fiction does not and should not do that. Worst of all it is no inspiring at all. Good fiction and artwork should be inspirational at least on some level. Almost Human is not, even though it is Almost Good. Score 5 for the cop show part, complete failure as near-future sci-fi series. Can't really say it could be rated much better than 3.

While at times it seems that it is nothing but elaborately phrased and painfully obvious extreme leftist propaganda, this is led ad absurdum when Stone attacks monuments of left wing politics with no other intend but to make himself appear more credible, more critical and more analytical. It is painful to watch because it uses the most brutish, most obvious and most unworthy rhetorical methods possible. It is a disgrace for any side in the political spectrum, it is mostly uninformative and it leaves the bitter aftertaste of stuporous misinformation and conspiracy nutjob babbling. I am simply amazed how it was possible to deconstruct the entire concept of the setting within barely 15 minutes. It is an insult to the viewer to just claim "physics went insane" and then just a few minutes down the road we are shown that most of the quintessential parts of technology are not also perfectly functional, but also that the characters are obviously too stupid to realize. If semi-automatic firearms work, engines work. Simple as that. Boiled down to the basics, an engine is nothing but a self-repeating series of controlled explosions. The simplest designs do not even need electricity to work, if you'd be forced to build them without. But all that does not even matter, because everything else is just as bad and inconsistent as the setting. The art department did a horrible job and most important items and settings do not look real and lived in at all. They look like a badly done set for a soap commercial. Wear and tear of 15 years forced partial neglect is used so badly and inconsistently on everything, that they might not have bothered with it at all. It is clear that the people responsible for the visual design have no talent of observation. That is quite common and always a problem, because who cannot observe and comprehend are doomed to get everything wrong. When you do not know how to look at things, you are missing all vital questions. Say there is an object. Say an airplane. Parked in exactly one spot for 15 years. If you have never seen anything similar, you will mess it up. And they did. Not just this but everything you actually pay attention to. Look too hard and it falls apart. Last but not least, the show suffers from a disease that is an increasing problem these days: Character lobotomy syndrome. The people inside the fictional word are so incredibly stupid and make such incredibly unacceptable and horrid mistakes in the most basic department, that it is implausible that they are alive at all. So the world is dangerous? Really? A lot?! So you fenced in a village but nobody was smart enough ever to bother with any actual kind of sentries or a solid defense? Why are they still there? Did they get overlooked by everything bad for more than a decade? Simply impossible. They are either too stupid to still exist like they allegedly do, or everyone else who might have posed a problem is. Both ways, it adds up to a lot of stupid and incompetence for the setting. The show is a mess.

The show is so full of inconsistencies that it hurts and the inconsistencies are actually getting worse. Second season does a lot to improve the flair of the scenery and seems more solid in the props department, but the CGI is still as bad as it was first season. While the acting is still more or less solid and the characters are still nicely cast, the authors still have no clue what to do with them and the character behavior tends to shift between crazed lunacy and lobotomized stupidity. Questions that every half-sane person would scream all over the place by now are simply not asked by the characters, things that anyone with survival instinct would do are not done. The authors simply fail completely to get their own minds into the characters and instead do it the other way around. Overall, the show has improved in some parts but by such little margin that I am surprised it did not go down the same drain that Terra Nova went.

What I have seen so far is well written, well acted, well cast, mostly thrilling and sufficiently credible. The only problem is that my gut feeling suggests that from here on it can only go one of two ways with nothing in between: Excellence or disaster. The creators either manage to pull it off all the way and make it stick without big holes in it, or it will fall apart horribly and implode upon itself. Considering where the base for the series was taken from, this is no surprise, since it is an expectable result of any such storyline transplantation without regard for the cultural environment of the original source.

One of the most important things for lending credibility to fictional characters is them them ask the questions and think the thoughts that normal human beings in their place would ask and think. The characters in Terra Nova fail doing so over and over again, leading to a cast made up mostly of zombies, staggering their way through badly written storywork. While the basic concepts of time travel, pollution and exodus are all potentially interesting, the execution is very bad. The Terra Nova colony is doomed to fail, because it's colonists have neither any frontier spirit, not much in the way of brains to make up for it. Yet, sometimes when stories and acting are bad, at least the design, props and special effects make up for it a little bit. This is not the case here, unfortunately. The visual impression suggests that someone went through the concept art trashcans of Jurassic Park, Avatar, Earth 2 and Lost, then picked all the worst pieces he could find and copy them badly. It is not a complete waste of time, but it is second to almost anything.

Doing so, I found out that it actually got better halfway through the season, but only a little and not nearly enough. My greatest issue with the show is, that the setting is completely implausible and has plot holes ranging from background to on-going story arc, which are so huge that tanks could be parked in them. A score of 1 instead of 0 is deserved, because most of the characters are well cast, even though the writers did not manage to do anything useful with them. The biggest minus in my opinion is the horrible quality of the special effects, which makes the menacing alien machines look like nothing more thrilling than broken Lego toys.
