Dogville5
Jul 17, 2023
Not about human nature, about psychopaths
Dogville lays its foundations on a succession of events that could only happen within a group of a dozen people with total lack of empathy. The whole argument of the movie depends on no character with common sense showing up, which pulverizes the idea that what is being talked about is human nature. It is, however, a good exemplification of psychopathic behaviour and how the author wishes that it wouldn't exist. The film also has a very over-the-line approach with ****, suggesting that it is excusable because its perpetrators don't know any better. The tone is not towards the victim being able to find forgiveness to give, but towards acceptance for rapists to act like they do. Overall, it is a movie that thinks it is doing more than what it actually is doing, but is still an interesting view on the psychopathic psique, however disgusting in its approach to ****.

This is one of the finest works that cinema has ever made in its entire history. Truly remarkable.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always7

It is a competent photograph on what it is like to be on an abortion process as a teenager, but those who are not foreign to the topic might find not much to take away from it. It took me a while to understand that the protagonist being hard to empatize with was a conscient choice and the message it delivers is quite a cherry on top that brings it to another level.

Not an easy film to understand, but if you do, it is a trully incredible experience.

The Hunt8
Jan 3, 2021
A great movie, though I think they went with the safest decisions a bit too much. It is a very straightforward story and very well told, but it recurs to uninteresting subplots to fill in spaces since the narrative is not so complex.

A lot of attention was put on world development here and the characters are spot on. So much so that this will probably figure in most top five Pixar animations lists. But it suffers a bit with verosimility, specially on character arc development. However, if the movie had done it better, we migh not have had a Pixar animation that is kids-firendly.

The Usual Suspects7

A good story with an average execution. It takes a while to take off and when it does so it is cool, but not much more than that. A nice watch.

The ultimate "how to make the most of a movie with a weak story" guide. Well built characters, clever and good looking photography, nice dialogues, but a well told weak story is still weak.

A sensorial journey with a mind boggling plot that keeps you hooked all the way through. Totally worth your time.

Casa Grande7
Sep 20, 2020
Casa Grande is good in most things it attempts to do, but just good. It is about thirty minutes shorter than what it should be as when you think it is going to have the most space to convey its point, it ends. Instead, it states its message in a very expositional and obvious way, choosing the easy rout instead of the brilliant one.

i'm thinking of ending things7

It has many well written, well executed events and the idea behind the story is ambitious, but if you have no previous knowledge about the story, not only you are not going to be given the experience you think Kaufman has in mind for you, but also what he does have in mind for you might require you a book read or an internet search. It is very close to wonderfully executed, though. A few better decisions would have made this film unforgettable.

Cold War7
Sep 1, 2020
As stunning as the photography and music performances are, the story in Cold War misses a few opportunities of being more memorable with generic character's backgrounds and uninspired conflict to fill time between one important event and another. If it wasn't for its mesmerizing visuals it would be a passable movie, but since it was wonderfully captured it is quite interesting to watch.

There Will Be Blood7
Sep 1, 2020
A few events in the narrative are inconsistent for the sake of getting a nice scene or impactful dialogue. Some of those things are very important to the story and would be better off with more coherent storytelling. Despite that, it is a worth watching movie with nice elements to offer.

Neon Bull4
Aug 12, 2020
This movie relies heavily on the cowboy/fashion designer dicotomy, but does so wasting every opportunity for conflict. It has no plot, which is not necessarily a problem, but way too many scenes are there just to hit the 90 minute mark. Not even the great cast and above-average photography is able to make an endless amount of cowboy scences doing ordinary cowboy stuff something meaningful or pleasant to watch.

A Ghost Story7
Aug 7, 2020
A Ghost Story has an incredible control of its tone and finds inventive ways of making its point. However, as well as it can make you feel that grief and lonliness, it never feels like enough of an experience.

You can feel the weight of every event and the humanity in each character. From photography to music score and story progression, Monos is a cinematographic experience of high caliber. Absolutely mesmerizing.

A White, White Day6
Jul 28, 2020
It never gets as interesting or complex as you think it will get and sometimes it feels like the movie is seeking the 100min mark as if it was first conceived as a short and then turned into a feature film. It is a nice watch, though, as photography and performances are great and the Icelandic setting gives you something different to look at.

Absolutely fascinating. No other production for the screen has ever come this close to transmitting the essence of a play and the magic of theatre in such outstanding beauty that makes you go wow more times than you can count.

The Grand Budapest Hotel7
Jul 11, 2020
Despite having stunning visuals and likeable characters, many of the events that you would want to watch unfold happens off screen and you never get to see it. The narrative also never does enough effort to be less predictable. Overall, though, it is a pleasant experience.

365 Days1
Jul 7, 2020
The plot makes this a (bad) 114 min soft-core porn movie that does pretty much everything wrong. Also, the message it delivers is borderline psychopathic to say the least.

Nightcrawler5
Jul 3, 2020
This movie does a few things right, but two big things wrong. The set up is incompatible with the delivery and it should be longer to finish in a proper way for a movie that has a protagonist such as this one.

It Comes at Night8
Jun 12, 2020
A true gem that makes the director Trey Shults one to keep an eye on. If you watch this movie expecting a horror movie, you will be disapointed. In fact, it delivers much more than an average horror movie as it provides you with things to think about while delivering an engaging plot. The more you think about this movie, the more you realize that it does so many things right that it deserves way more recognition than it gets.
