Resident Evil Requiem7

Good, but far from great imo. The actress w-w-w-who p-p-p-plays Grace is so bad and corny she's just annoying, like watching a junior high kid play a wounded war vet or something- it's just hard to believe or empathize with the character. The game is $95CAD which is theft for a 10 hour game. The villain isn't scary. Story is definitely not scary at all. There were very few big memorable scenes or sections, it just kinda flows along. The action and gameplay was well done, and I had fun while it lasted but a day later and I can't think of anything that really excited me. If it had been priced better I would have given it an 8, but I'm tired of AAA studio greed. This game just reminds me why I usually wait for deep sales.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II6
May 29, 2024
Pretty disappointed with Senua's Saga. I really loved the first game- the dark tone, amazing visuals, and most importantly the compelling and well-paced story. Hellblade 2 feels like a lazy expansion to the first game. There are still a lot of the qualities that I liked about the first game, such as the creepy world and character designs. But the length (about 7 hrs for me) is pathetic. It took longer for me to complete the first game! The worst thing though is the pacing and boring story. In the first game, I constantly felt like the story was building. Every hour of that game was exciting. Hellblade 2 feels like you're just walking between one lame fight to a lame puzzle and then over to another slightly-less-lame fight, with no real excitement or story.
Maybe Ninja Theory just got lucky with Hellblade and I shouldn't have expected them to pull it off again, but man was I disappointed by this game. I would say if you play it on game pass or something, it's worth going through it as it still has some great moments and does look amazing, but if you're expecting a bigger, better Hellblade (like I was) you're going to feel very underwhelmed.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales6
Apr 2, 2024
I loved Spider-Man, and as far as gameplay goes, Miles Morales is a great continuation of that game. Miles is a good character, but this game really loses me with it's sappy story and side characters. The first game had some sentimental moments, but it served the story. In M.M., there's this constant bombardment of sappiness that just comes off as cheesy. I'd say it's manipulative, but that would suggest it's capable of evoking the desired emotions from the player. For me, I was rolling my eyes constantly. Either there were different, less experienced writers for M.M., or they just didn't put much as much effort into this game.
Another aspect of the bad writing is the fact that Miles is constantly making everything worse- he either screws something up by acting careless, and then the mission we play is cleaning up his mess, or he "saves the day" in a wreckless way that adds more danger to the city. Obviously there was a bit of this in the original Spider-Man, where Peter is in a big fight that destroys buildings and stuff, but at least then we got the sense that he was trying to contain the damage and danger. In M.M., we play as this kid who just stupidly adds to the destruction, and yet we're supposed to root for him, and feel like we're in his shoes while playing. I understand that he's young and just coming to grips with becoming (a) Spiderman, but I don't want to play as a superhero that **** and is constantly making mistakes. I kept getting the sense throughout the game that Miles should really just leave this stuff to Peter, which is too bad cause I think he's a good character in other ways.

Racket Fury: Table Tennis VR6
Oct 21, 2023
Overpriced. It's fun for a couple days, but as a decent table tennis player irl, this is kind of on the fence- the simulation is not bad, but it's not great either. it's as if you're playing with a $5 paddle. The spin doesn't actually effect your opponents shot at all. I tried all kinds of bottoms and side spins and it gets returned like a no-spin shot. also, just barely tapping the ball will win more matches than if you smash it or use crazy spin or play like in real life. When you smash a top spin shot, it gets returned at the same speed. If you just do block shots and softly return, your opponent will often miss... makes it more like 3D Pong than table tennis.
That said, I have enjoyed playing through the campaign's bots, though I've 3-starred most of them in a day...
Tried multiplayer, it took forever to match up with someone and when I did it was buggy. We restarted and it was better, but still laggy.
I despise this model that greedy devs are using now of selling an unfinished game for full price and then promising to add to it later. When I spent $40 CAD I thought I'd be getting a lot more. Especially for a game that's been around for years on different platforms- there's no excuse.

God of War: Ragnarok7
Sep 26, 2023
The polish and gameplay are great, near perfect even, but the writing and some bad acting really hampers this sequel. There are many scenes that are just so cheesy they had me rolling my eyes. Freya is annoying and impossible to relate to- she's just nasty to everyone, yet we're supposed to see her as this powerful, respected leader. Atreus's actor is somehow much worse than in the first game and his character is so bratty it's frustrating. New characters are really stupid and forced. The writers make the mistake of making them all really snarky and know-it-all, which just makes them unlikeable. Modern writers do this a lot, where they think that to make a character strong and have dimensions, they only have to make them ultra passive-aggressive and pissy- how they expect but 12 year olds to like these characters is beyond me.
I'm really hoping that part 3 isn't all Atreus and Angrboda, though I'm sure the writers will do just that.

Final Fantasy XVI4
Aug 30, 2023
So disappointing. This game is very boring. I actually find my mind wandering while playing the game. The world feels pointless and dead. The gameplay is far too easy and braindead with no way to up the difficulty. The 'performance' mode runs like crap- literally looks/feels like a 30fps game. Quests are simply npc's saying "go see ___", walk 30 steps, press x to talk to npc, walk back to first npc. Everything about the way this game plays is paint-by-numbers and goes beyond boring into the realm of irritating. I'm usually into narrative-driven, cinematic games, and since that's what people kept saying was this game's strength, I spent the $95 CAD... I feel ripped off. This game proves to me that a big cinematic story doesn't save, or even help, when the gameplay and tech aspects are this boring/bad. Even the demo section made the game seem like it had some promise because they obviously put more time into polishing it- but soon after you pass that section you'll notice things like character models, cinematics, and sidequests drop off dramatically in quality. This feels like a game an indie studio would make in 2015, but with plagarized high-budget cinematics spliced in every 30 seconds to pad it out. I wouldn't like this game if it had been made by a small team of indie devs, but the fact that Sqaure Enix and CBUIII made this with the budget they had does make me hate it a little more. This is because they have no excuse for how lazy this game feels. i feel like the writers of the game really tried to do their job, but everyone else on the dev/publisher teams just couldn't care less. Square Enix ****, and I should have known better. Why would I pay $95 to a company whose last release was Forspoken!? Because I thought CBUIII had some integrity. The people giving this 10's are either devs who worked on it or their family and friends. No one could play this for more than 6 hours and not be bored to tears.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut10
Aug 21, 2023
An absolute 10. Anyone giving this game less than an 8 is being dishonest. Giving the whole game a low score because you felt the upgrade cost was too high or the dlc wasn't long enough is ridiculous. That's the type of thing that may cause a loss of 1, maybe 2 points at most, and only if it really upset you. I'm playing the director's cut on ps5 as my first time through the game, and it is an amazing experience on par with The Witcher 3 or even Red Dead 2- now I personally think RDR2 is a better game overall, but it is like comparing every new film made to The Godfather or Raging Bull... and even in that case, this is like someone saying that a Kurosawa film like Seven Samurai or Ikiru isn't a masterpiece because they prefer Citizen Kane. Ghost of Tsushima is near perfect in every way. I see people complain about graphics!?!? This is one of the very few games I've played that runs 60fps in fidelity mode! Seriously, this game looks as good or in most cases better than anything coming out in 2023, especially taking into account the gorgeus art direction/design. the story is compelling and propulsive- It had me wanting to save main missions so I could savour the overall story more. Which brings me to side missions, which is where I think the comparison to Witcher 3 is warranted. Sure, if you're trying to 100% it there are a lot of going around searching for artifacts and charms and stuff, but the actual 'tales' missions are all great and give the world and main story more depth. The combat is addictive and can be as varied as you make it. The further in the story I got the more I started experimenting with different combinations of ghost weapons, bow, and melee strikes, not to mention getting comfortable with switching stances meant I was taking on large groups and fighting each foe in a different way. I'm glad they didn't try to introduce magic or curses or something like that because it wouldn't have fit. Overall, if you're at all like me and like games that focus on story just as much as gameplay, you'll be hard pressed to find faults with GOT. In fact, I was literally trying to think of reasons to doc a point and give it a 9 until I realized how stupid and unfair that was. This is the kind of game that stands out from everything else you're playing, and will go down as an classic.

TRIPP: A New Way to Meditate0
Aug 10, 2023
SCAM ALERT!!! SHAME ON TRIPP LLC AND SHAME ON SONY! EDIT: I originally gave this a 4 which was very generous. After a few more sessions I'm convinced this is a scam. I could have bought 2 or 3 other psvr2 games for the same price but I'm the 1 idiot who bought the snakeoil. Tripp LLC is obviously 1 lazy, greedy person, but I'm more shocked that Sony would put this up and charge $80 CAD!!! A complete ripoff. I meditate daily, so I thought this could be a interesting way to do my meditation routine with some cool visuals and engaging mechanics... not at all. Its laughable how cheap and half-assed everything looks and feels. You literally do the same breathing exercise and minigame no matter what you choose, and they throw in the same half-dozen stock photos of animals at the end of each 'session', which adds to the feeling that this was made by some high school student just screwing around with a vr game engine. I paid $80 CAD for this garbage and will likely never use it again. I wish the option for the monthly subscription was available so at least I would have only lost out on the cost of one month, but obviously the devs saw that no one was intentionally keeping their subs and decided to burn their reputation by charging AAA big-budget prices for garbage. shame on you tripp, llc. you guys are pathetic.

Moss: Book II7
Aug 9, 2023
It's a good little game, but it's too short and a little too easy. And it loses a full point for the absolute cringe that is the voice actor who does all the roles- she literally sounds like she's doing a 40's gangster impression half the time- "c'mere, see- gonna pump ya fulla lead hmm, seee" and the other half of the time she's just doing this annoying growl that puts Tuvan throat singers to shame. Her voice acting had me rolling my eyes everytime the game shoved her dumb voice in my ears. Also, Polyarc is now doing some dumb moba sequel "glassbreakers"!? who the hell wants that?

THESE DEVS ARE LAZY AND GREEDY I'm not even trying to be funny here- Hot Shots Golf, a ps1 game from 1997, is a better game that is way more fun to play. You can tell right away that the devs put no thought into this; the game feels lifeless. You can't even create your own character! I wanted to try out a new golf game cause I was getting nostalgiac about playing Hot Shots back in the early 2000's... well this game feels and looks old. The controls are so counter-intuitive that I ended up accidentally switching out my putter when I was on the green without even knowing, and smashing the ball 100 yards away, which ruined my first tournament of 'my career', and there's no restart or mulligans or anything, I have to continue from that terrible shot. People spend a lot of time arguing over games, but like with any art form or entertainment, genre and tech aspects and such aren't as important as the simple question of whether the game pulls you in and is fun to play. This is not. It is frustrating for all the wrong reasons. There is nothing added here to make the player excited, unless you love having ads pop up constantly trying to get you to purchase hats and shirts and crap. Just pathetic. Even the people giving this an 8 or 9 all say "...but the graphics really do ****". Thankfully I didn't pay a dime for this garbage, as it's free on ps+ right now.

VR Skater8
Aug 7, 2023
Well I gotta say- VR Skater has been a pleasant surprise! I'm usually not that into sports games, spending most of my time playing more narrative-focused games, but the last few days I've been playing VR Skater exclusively. As someone who spent his teenage years very dedicated to skating, this game has been a real pleasure to play and improve at. I keep seeing people mention the difficulty, but I feel like I've been steadily improving and am pulling some pretty cool combos/runs after only a few sessions. Sure, you won't be doing 30X combos, but that's because it's more of a sim than say, a tony hawk PS. And honestly, pulling off simple tricks in this feels way better and more rewarding than mastering a tony hawk game. My only negative is that the game feels a little empty in terms of levels and modes... hopefully the devs are gonna keep adding new maps and challenges, cause with the price tag being what it is, I do feel like this could quickly get boring and feel overpriced. That said, for now I'm all in and loving it, even while I'm still trying to get good.

It really does make you feel like a jedi with a gun- it feels and looks amazing. The controls are good, though trying to aim the telekinesis, like when trying to throw a box at someone, feels a little clumsy. It really is a lot of fun to play, with cool "hacks" and upgrades that keep the loops fresh. This game could be a 10 if it had a compelling story. I find it really frustrating that of all the limitations VR devs have to work with/around, writing a great story isn't one of them and yet- there are soooo few VR games that even try to tell a good story at all. Devs need to stop treating VR games as tech demos and start telling great stories. All psvr2 owners have for games with strong narratives is Moss 1 + 2. The devs obviously put so much love and effort into this game, and I applaud them, but I wish they had spent the time to write a story that isn't an afterthought.

Bought this on ps5 to play after seeing the vr trailer. Then I realize theres no vr for anything except meta!?!? I feel ripped off. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice10
Jan 9, 2023
Played this early 2023 on ps5 with 60hz turned on- this game still looks better than almost everything released in 2022. This game feels like it was made for me, the quest through hellheim being paired with this girl's madness makes for the coolest envioronments and design in any video game I've played. I just finished witcher 3 and thought whatever I played next would be disappointing- Hellblade blew me away, I played the whole game over the course of one sunday and it was an experience I won't forget. Sure, the enemies can feel repetitious, but the combat feels awesome and the boss characters are really cool. They already killed it with the first installment, now I'm going to buy an xbox x just to play hellblade 2 because I'm that confident it will be a major event for me.

I feel stupid buying this for full price. An obvious mistake that a lot of creative but lazy people (myself included) make is thinking "good enough" when they're only halfway to something great. This game is the perfect example of this. playing on ps5, the faces and hair look like ps3 graphics. the creatures look like ripoffs from other games, with some neon colors added (ooh, how modern... PSYCH) no excuse for this. it's 2022 and your game looks like **** the setting just a bunch of super twisty paths connecting buildings. The combat it simple melee fighting, except you fight with ...sage? cool, i guess. nah actually thats stupid. People saying the story is it's highlight? what story!? you already know the whole story after the opening scene! there is no interesting character archs, no subverting expectations, no big emotional or spectacular moments. it's just boring. and the only parts that aren't too easy are just frustratingly simple but tedious. I think the gameplay is fine. I finished the game so it's not like it was a total steaming pile, I'm just slightly annoyed I once again wasted $55 on a mediocre game I finished in one night.

As a fan of these types of games, I'd give it a solid 9. It is the scariest game I've played since Visage, but it has a longer story, varied settings, and some great puzzles. So I'd say if you're like me and you love turning out all the lights, putting on the headphones and letting the atmosphere and dread take over, you definitely want to play this game. Some of the puzzles had me head scratching, but only for a short time- there was always a solution that made me think "of course! how did I not get it sooner?" Personally, I don't want puzzles that are easy. I want to feel some small accomplishment when I come to the solution. And in a game like this, with the amazing sound design keeping you on edge, it adds to the dread when you have to backtrack through dark halls or explore around a room. The only negative for me is simply that I felt like the creativity could have gone further, and weirder, in terms of the horror and the "monsters". I think **** like Inside or The Forest, or even the godfather P.T., where the game takes turns that just wow the player, and I feel like there could have been some more of that. The familiar horror tropes were all here, albeit done very well. This game felt like Visage 2- a bigger, improved sequal. After a game like Martha Is Dead, I was a little disappointed at how quickly I raced through it, with very little scares. Cautiously optimistic going into Madison, it exceded my expectations. So I'm giving this a solid 9- if you like the P.T. style games, this is arguably the best we've got right now.

A lot of fun, great acting and overall vibe, but too short and overpriced. If you're like me and grew up on Friday the 13th and have enjoyed a Supermassive/interactive-movie game, this is right up your alley. It looks amazing, the setting is great, the story is simple but effective, and the characters are surprisingly likeable. I'm so sick of the stereotypical **** girl and the brooding-but-secretly-cool guy characters but they were written and performed well enough here that it didn't bother me. It's definitely light on gameplay, but the amount of choice and consequence throughout keeps it immersive and fairly exciting, While I didn't find it particularly scary, I really appreciate that Supermassive hires real actors, which helps you to get invested in the story. It isn't the masterpiece that I think these devs are capable of, but I had a lot of fun with it and loved the whole mood and pace of the storytelling. Characters like Laura and Max, Dylan, Travis Hackett, even Abi and Ryan (who grew on me), were all great and really had me hooked on their respective narratives. The one big downside is that I kept thinking how i just paid CAD$90 on a game that lasted 2 evenings. It would be amazing if it was a full-length, 20+ hr game that spans many days. I would totally follow the camp throughout the whole summer as a slow burn mystery starts to unfold. I imagine in the future Supermassive will go beyond the single-night story and maybe adapt a great horror book into a long, epic story where you follow characters in their lives and things slowly start to unravel and go nuts. Maybe something with a serial killer or something that doesn't rely on revealing a creature and then just fizzling out. Maybe Quantic Dream will beat them to it. Like a modern and up-to-date, not-terribly-cheesy Heavy Rain. I love what Supermassive is doing, and this particular story should have been a home-run for me, but I can't help feeling a little disappointed after ending it. I think we'll see a masterpiece from this team, but it's not The Quarry
