After more than two decades, Onimusha finally has a new chapter. And for me, this feels like a return that was worth the wait.

And it’s precisely during these moments that the game really shines. You look at the environment. You realise there’s something you can use. You start experimenting. And when you finally find the solution, you get that satisfying feeling of having figured it out yourself. The exploration also works really well. The eight biomes help keep things varied, while the seven dungeons offer different challenges, mechanics and environments. The community-building is another detail I really enjoyed. You meet characters throughout the adventure and, little by little, you start turning that small town into a livelier place. The biggest problem is the combat. It works, but it’s clearly less interesting than the puzzles and exploration. The co-op could also have been more ambitious, as it’s limited to specific stages. Even so, that doesn’t take away from the main experience. Isle of Reveries knows exactly what it wants to be. A colourful, charming retro adventure with creative puzzles, dungeons, exploration, and a healthy dose of nostalgia. If you enjoy games inspired by the classic The Legend of Zelda titles, especially the Game Boy Color era, Isle of Reveries definitely deserves your attention. It’s not simply a game trying to make you remember the past. It uses that inspiration as a starting point to create an adventure of its own. And for me, that’s exactly its greatest strength. It’s a small adventure with a big personality.

I’ll be honest: Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster has a really good idea behind it and manages to deliver an enjoyable experience for anyone who loves classic Metroidvanias. Even so, there’s one thing Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster does really well: it makes you want to keep exploring. You want to discover the next transformation. You want to know what’s hiding in that blocked-off area. You want to take on the next boss. And you want to find out just how far that new ability can take you. For me, that’s fundamental in a Metroidvania. If you enjoy 2D action games, exploration, classic fantasy and progression based on unlocking new abilities, Barbarian Saga: The Beastmaster is worth giving a chance. It’s not a perfect game, and there are still a few things that could be improved. But there’s a solid foundation here and, most importantly, it has an identity of its own. It’s a simple, straightforward fantasy adventure with plenty of personality. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we’re looking for in a good Metroidvania.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is one of those JRPGs that requires patience, but rewards you greatly if you decide to embark on the adventure. The story is the biggest highlight. And there’s a huge amount of side content for anyone who wants to get to know this world better. Of course, not everything has aged perfectly. The pacing can be slow. There’s a lot of dialogue. And the graphics make it clear that we’re talking about a game that was originally released quite a few years ago. But for me, those things are secondary. Because once the story starts to gain momentum, Trails to Azure manages to draw you in in a way that few JRPGs can. You start out wanting to find out what’s going to happen to Lloyd. Then you want to understand what’s happening to Crossbell. And before you know it, you’re completely invested in the characters and the world. If you enjoy JRPGs with deep stories, well-developed characters, turn-based combat and plenty of exploration, The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is an experience that is well worth your time. But I have one important recommendation: Play Trails from Zero first. Because Azure is much more than a sequel. It’s the continuation of a story that has been carefully built up. And when you reach the end, you realise that all that time you invested in Crossbell was truly worth it.

But if you enjoy RPGs with roguelike elements, management, exploration and that classic “just one more run” feeling, Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault has plenty to offer. For me, it’s a sequel that doesn’t abandon what made the first game special. Quite the opposite. It takes the original idea, puts it into a 3D world, increases the scale and adds even more possibilities. Some dungeons can feel repetitive, the camera can be frustrating at times, and the story could be easier to follow. But when I look at the experience as a whole, it’s hard to deny just how much Mortal Shell II has evolved. It doesn’t simply try to be another copy of Dark Souls or Elden Ring. It takes the Soulslike formula, adds its own ideas and creates an experience with an identity of its own. If you enjoy Soulslikes, action RPGs, dark fantasy and challenging games, Mortal Shell II definitely deserves your attention. Especially if you played the first game and found yourself thinking: “This game could be so much better. ”Because now, it’s much closer to becoming exactly that.
