This is easily the best of the spinoffs to date, because of our intense connection to these bold characters and their desire for each other. [11 - 31 Mar 2024, p.5]

While “The Ones Who Live” isn’t exactly review proof, if you’ve been pining away for these two, nothing anyone says will stop you from sucking the marrow out of this carcass. The less emotionally invested but curious, though, may also be pleased to see what these two look like now.

The latest spin-off’s success will depend entirely on how truly invested the fandom is in Rick and Michonne’s relationship. Nothing new is being offered, in fact the new iteration seems to have gone to some trouble to keep the kind of overarching storylines and not quite credible threats to the couple’s existence and happiness that weighed down earlier attempts.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is basically a love story wrapped in the usual TWD post-apocalyptic shell. But what we hope is that the love story breaks through that shell and shows us something we haven’t seen from the franchise before.

Originally announced as movies that would feature Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira, “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” became a series instead, and as conceived and constructed, the least impressive of the zombie drama’s recent spinoffs. While Lincoln’s involvement as the original star looks like a coup, that’s poor compensation for questionable decisions regarding how to showcase him.

Whenever The Ones Who Live seems to be finally getting to the heart of this new chapter of an expansive story, the world comes rushing back in. There could be something poetic about this if handled more deftly, but the show chooses to make explosive sacrifices to spectacle without any indication of what will play out.

“The Ones Who Live” suffers from its position in the bloated universe these characters find themselves in, and despite the beautiful work from its two main actors, it never quite reaches its full potential. The stakes don’t truly feel high enough.

Excellent episode. Provided the audience with a roller-coaster of a ride. We felt every emotion and more. Stellar cast and cinematography. And the writing is exceptional.

For longtime fans, I believe you'll find the special season generally a decent watch. For those who might have been displeased with the original series finale, this season proves a much more suitable replacement. While at times there are a few moments that go too long and too hard on the melodramatic "love conquers all" theme, the season provides the long-awaited ending to many of the main characters' stories. It's nothing to write home about, but it ticks the needed boxes. The faults lie in the overly rushed ending along with the "meh/really?" secret that is revealed at the very last episode. The entire season of 6 episodes consists of 5 fairly lengthy ones of buildup to a secret reveal and "big fight" between a couple of antagonists, and everything is basically unveiled and the game buzzer is blaring, probably all within the space of 10-15 minutes. It's kind of ridiculous in retrospect, honestly. Longtime fans have seen far worse however, and I walked away somewhat satisfied. Would have been nice though, that if they were going to give a child actor the last line of everything, they could have given him something far less cringy to say or at least worked with him enough in practice to nail the delivery to make it kinda believable or less "womp-womp". They really wanted this miniseries to give the "epic love story of the ages" vibe. And they did okay, but of course went a little too hard in parts. Overall, if you're a fan, go ahead and watch it, you probably won't regret it. Just don't expect a home run, but more of a 2nd or 3rd base.
