"The OA" is one of the most significant shows of the year simply because Marling and Batmanglij barrel through so many boundaries, stretch their combined imaginations so far and challenge the shopworn precepts of what is supposed to make an acceptable television series.

The less you know about it before going in the better. This is a must-watch series and if a feeling of incompleteness should fill your cavity upon completing it, simply cleanse your palette and start over again.

1st season is just brilliant. 2nd one is nothing but a pretentious crap. 100% reasonable cancelling, IMO. Though you can watch 1st season only and pretend that 2nd one does not exist.

A compellingly strange, eight-episode psychological thriller that the streaming service has more or less dropped on us without much advance notice.

Committing time to such programs requires a leap of faith. The OA mostly justifies that investment, even if the filmmakers couldn't quite stick the landing.

It unfurls slowly (so, so slowly, especially in its early episodes) into a cerebral sci-fi mystery not quite as compelling as it’s convinced it is.

It’s a winter binge suited for die-hards, but the viewer who needs a boost (character development, clear storytelling) to enter an imagined world will find the series a tough sit.

It’s weird, and slow, teasing and teasing its way to a payoff that is meant to seem profound and instead plays as utterly ludicrous and at times borders on offensive.

The most creative, beautifully written and acted series out there. Brit and Zal have amazing imaginations. I absolutely love The OA!

Starts off as a solid 9.5, then degenerates into a 4, sadly. Overall, it's watchable, I guess, but it would have been so much better if it had a rough start and ended on a high note instead. "Pretentious" is the best word for it, I think.

Good atmosphere and intriguing story kept me awake whole night just to be disappointed with an ending which felt kind of flat, illogical and rushed. Still, it made me interested enough that I will be back if there is a second season.

The show was really good at first. Then the interpretive dance started and every character stayed bland. The show had a mystery factor that kept me wanting more for awhile till about episode 6. I told myself to finish the first 8 episodes instead of stopping at 6 and that was a mistake. Couldn't fall in love with any character The story couldn't keep the mystery going The acting feels embarrassing to watch at some points

Horribly pretentious. The best I can say is I kept watching to see if it would proved fruitful (it doesn't). There are enough puzzles to pique initial interest, but they are resolved in trite and sometimes laughable ways (The final reveal about the meaning of "The OA" made me audibly groan). I really enjoyed another Brit Marling project, Sound of My Voice, but this just retreads some similar themes in a manner that is too drawn out and kitschy to have any real impact.
