The first two episodes hit some comedic sweet spots, both visually and verbally. But if the government again shuts down over DACA, Colbert and his writers will be increasingly hard-pressed to find the funny.

The series, a purported behind-the-scenes look at the Trump administration, has its intermittent funny moments, and the character designs of the people who populate Trump’s cabinet are entertaining. But the story that’s grafted onto the first episode — Trump has to find an anniversary gift for Melania — is sitcom-trite and reminiscent of the old Comedy Central series “That’s My Bush.”

The caricatures in the series are great, the voices are pretty good, and the jokes are OK. The only real problem with “Our Cartoon President” is that half the country doesn’t need it and the other half doesn’t want it.

In ordinary times a person could argue that there’s always room for another comedian to skewer our nation’s top windbag, but these are not ordinary times. And this makes Trump character’s joke about people “kinda [wanting] to see what was going to happen” with his presidency seeing that “it’s happening more than you could have ever imagined” simultaneously bland and depressing.

“It’s like everyone is you,” cartoon Melania says. “They’re like, ‘Bigly!’ ‘Tremendous!’” That comment describes precisely what’s wrong with Our Cartoon President, a depiction of what goes on inside the White House that’s exaggerated a tad for laughs, yet still feels remarkably tepid compared to what we’ve already read in Fire and Fury.

More often, Our Cartoon President manages to be mean and toothless at the same time. ... The show is just timely enough to be outdated.

Much like the Cheeto-in-Chief himself, Showtime’s edgeless animated comedy pays lip service to its most troubling issue before dodging the problem in favor of inane gibberish.

Fun to watch, but nothing outstanding.
Show doesn't really take itself seriously but does a great job at keeping you entertained. Don't expect it to be something like ****'s more similar to American Dad(but American Dad is better :D).

It's no wonder the metascore is so low for this show considering maybe 40% of the American viewing public is going to hate it on principle. So don't let the numbers fool you. I'm a Canadian watching this administration from the outside through the lens of common sense; there's plenty of absurdity watching your actual president in action, and this show nails it down more often than not. Basically, most of the jokes land simply by highlight the unusually short distance between the source material and the cartoonishly surreal. It's ham-fisted at times, and the caricatures, like Colbert's monologues, are not loving at all. But it also doesn't feel too overboard, if only because the real president is kind of overboard by default. Every goofy thing the cartoon president (and all the other familiar faces) says and does just sounds like the real thing only turned up to 11. It's just Donald J Trump meets Homer J Simpson. And it works, generally by making you shake your head and chortle at the fact that real life isn't too far off. Lines like "I've lost two wives, so if you think about it, I've been twice as devastated as you." You almost feel like the real guy just hasn't said them *yet.* If you're a Trump devotee, the only good news here is that a) the Democrats aren't exactly spared, albeit barely ever showing up, and b) cartoon T never crosses over into abject evil (the show actually steers clear of overly negative imagery.) But there's no way those two things will get you to sit through this show for more than 2 minutes. You'll write it off as some sort of hateful mindlessness, but unfortunately that's because you've desensitized yourself to the objective absurdity of this presidency. This show is obviously written by people with no interest in making him look good, but the thing is a chunk of this show could easily have come from the mind of unbiased observers with an eye for the completely ludicrous. Which we have no shortage of these days, sorry to say. And cartoon Hannity is uproarious.
