It’s Florida, Man. is quirky, fun and sometimes scary, which pretty much reflects the state where its stories take place.

A crazy companion piece to Drunk History, employing non-fiction interviews and over-the-top recreations to recount some of most moronic chapters in America’s recent past.

In the four episodes (of six) made available to critics, the show’s melody is “Get a load of this!” But its harmony kicks in with cheerful depth, a curiosity about the loves and agonies that extend beyond a local news segment.

Some of this material plays like true-story versions of the situations and characters famed Florida novelist Carl Hiaasen (“Strip Tease,” “Bad Monkey”) puts in his books. Maybe it would have worked better if we just saw Faris, Richardson, et al, in the fictionalized versions of events. Seeing the actual people, who often seem to be lost and overwhelmed by life, makes it more depressing than a comedy series should be.

The familiar actors are a cute touch, elevating It’s Florida, Man above the gawking that a similar concept on TLC or Discovery might deliver.

The Sunshine State has become an easy mark. And some of the slander might even be true. Which is how this late-night comedy series presents itself.
