Many of them [tracks on "Recode"] are for completists only (did we really need SACD mixes, if anyone remembers what those are?) but along with the companion EPs that followed his final two albums, highlights include James Murphy’s “Steve Reich mix” of “Love Is Lost” (which incorporates winking elements from “Ashes to Ashes”); the Metro remix of “Everyone Says Hi,” with its breezy electronic feel reminiscent of Tame Impala; a wild remix of “Disco King” featuring Tool’s Maynard James Keenan and Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante; an oddball collaboration with Lou Reed called “Hop Frog”; and a completely bonkers version of Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s snarky 1986 song “Love Missile F1-11.” .... An artfully curated creative afterlife.

Includes an epic live show at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where Bowie played songs from Heathen alongside strong selection of hits followed by Low in its atmospheric entirety. [Oct 2025, p.41]

Bowie sounded like Bowie again. .... Judging by the excellent A Reality Tour live album, remastered and resequenced here, Bowie was on a roll. .... The ground was being tilled for Bowie’s extraordinary swansong, Blackstar. .... His late-career bits-and-bobs tracks, as evidenced by the music gathered on the Re:Call 6 compilation and The Next Day Extra and No Plan EPs, were often fantastic.

These albums aren’t grand artistic statements, nor do they need to be. Nothing’s gonna touch him in these silver years (wah wah wah), and he’s tossing them out there for fun alone. He also sounds like he’s enjoying himself, chatting and joking, on the much-seen Montreux Jazz Festival gig from 2002, preserved here (and featuring a near-complete performance of Low). Montreux isn’t the only extra: Reality Live is also here, as well as Re:Call 6. .... His next two albums were grand artistic statements. [Oct 2025, p.116]

One could argue the 68 tracks of live Material and multiple versions of certain songs - five of Heathen opener Sunday, for example - might be overkill. .... The exclusive four-disc Live At Montreux Jazz Festival, recorded on July 18, 2002, has a weak sleeve, but the music is blistering. [Nov 2025, p.100]

The gold for hardcore fans still long-pocketed enough to remain completists 0 a 41-track Re:call segment corraling non-album alternatives, B-sides and soundtrack work. Of course, this is the only element proper Bowie fans truly want. But do they actually need it when it comes irrevocably bolted to eight CDS of stuff they've already got? .... The Rare stuff? All gravy. [Oct 2025, p.84]
