Though it sometimes clings a little too tightly to sensibilities of seasons past, "Stranger Things" Season 5A is a rewarding, tightly paced showing that's worth the extra-long wait.

Stranger Thing Season 5 Part 1— streaming now — is full of gaudy special effects, nonsensical lore, and insane plot devices, and yet you will still somehow fall under the show’s spell. That’s because it was never the spectacle or super-sized episode run times that won audiences over. No, the best part of Stranger Things is still, as it’s always been, the sheer humanity of its characters and the incandescent talent of its young cast.

“Stranger Things” lacks the wide-eyed, Spielbergian wonder of its early seasons. But even in its bloated, current form, there are still some charming character moments, bits of good humor and judicious use of ‘80s pop tunes (Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” gets a spooky workout).

But it’s not just Hawkins that feels cut off from the world. It’s Stranger Things itself, a show now sealed in an airless, impenetrable bubble of stagnant characters and snarled lore.

You can see that all the effort the writers, actors, directors and producers put throughout the series did pay off. I really liked the pace, the story and specially the character development of Holly Wheeler, who was not in my radar at all and suddenly we see a character who is a perfect mix of her elder siblings. In general a very good start of the series, let's see how this develops but I cannot imagine this being an epic flop like Game of Thrones; it's going to be more like Breaking Bad.

Absolutely dull dreck. This show should've stopped after season 1. Either that or gone with the original plan to be an anthology. So pointlessly stretched out.

The writing and CGI are notably worse despite this season receiving a dump truck of funding. This season lacks the charm, chemistry, charisma, and consistency to place it on the level of the previous seasons. One minute demogorgons are invincible to guns, the next they are weakened by baseball bats. We are pausing key moments to explore our sexuality in forced ways. This season has brought nothing new or surprising this far, and instead of tying up loose ends it frays them with a lack of creative focus.
