Joan’s peculiar kind of charm is mostly owed to Allen, who gives what might be the most complex, layered performance of her career.

Joan’s story unfolds all too neatly, but in Allen’s spark and grace there’s a real sense of discovery.

I really enjoyed this movie. The cast worked well together. If you like action movies etc this isn't for you. This movie reminded me a little of "something's gotta give". I will be watching it again.

It’s less the story of a woman taking a year off from city life and her husband than it is a pleasant revue of sketches and scenarios on that topic.

The movie is not entirely my cup of tea, although it is refreshing in its depiction of diverse, older female characters.

Unfortunately, this overlong picture rarely feels particularly authentic.

Nothing much happens here. It’s scenic, but writer-director Alexander Janko has cast the thing with no flavor. Nobody has an accent, not even the local Cape Cod characters.

Even women will lose their man cards if they buy a ticket to Year by the Sea, a figurative and nearly retch-inducing celebration of the ovary based on a best-selling memoir by Joan Anderson.

In 1989 there was a very popular play and movie called “Shirley Valentine” which could be summarized as a middle-aged housewife, wondering what happened to her life. When a friend wins a vacation, Shirley begins to see the world, and herself, in a different light.
In “Year By The Sea” Karen Allen plays Joan who is facing two crisis in her life with the first experiencing a mother whose children have left the nest and the second being her husband telling her that his firm is closing the office in the area they and he made the decision they would transfer to Wichita without talking to her first.
Joan, a writer, makes her own decision to take off to Cape Cod for a year to write a new book and find out who she really is besides being a mother, wife and writer.
We take that journey with her and a splendid cast made up of Allen, Celia Imrie, S. Epahta Merkerson, Yannick Bisson, Michael Cristofer among others.
“Year By The Sea” is a pleasant film, easy to watch, but it is the many glorious shots of the sea and the surrounding area that are really the star of the movie.
