Vampire in Brooklyn, a purported "comic tale of horror and seduction" that is neither funny nor frightening, just unpleasant.

Vampire in Brooklyn isn't a disaster. In fact, it has some funny moments. But it's a long way from being the comeback movie Eddie Murphy needs. [27 Oct 1995, p.57]

Personally, I wouldn't put this movie into the horror category, because I didn't find it scary at all. The movie was surprisingly funny, though and I really enjoyed Eddie Murphy's performance. The story itself wasn't bad and those of you, who have read Bram Stoker's Dracula, will actually notice some slight similarities, just in a completely different setting. Ah, and some of the music used in this movie was really great.

It is not a good movie but hits my „So bad it is good“ spot. To clarify: Without that I would rate it as 3/10 or lower. The movie itself has a combination of director Wes Craven famous for horror and actor Eddie Murphy famous for comedy. Lets say it mixes not well here or sounds better on paper. The title is also what you get “Vampire in Brooklyn”. It starts with an abandoned ship that crashes into the dockyards in New York and the police investigating into the strange circumstances. I stop here to avoid spoilers. The story is not that good but has some good moments and is strangely entertaining (for me). I point out the church preaching scene which I liked as it is hilariously funny. However the movie is a bit incoherent and feels like they often do not know if they should aim for horror or comedy. The humor hits more than it misses for me but the horror aspect fails mostly. The actors are excellent for me in the “Good actors imprisoned in a bad script” way. Eddie Murphy is still entertaining in his role and has fun. Kadeem Hardison is the hidden gem in the movie and I would probably enjoy a spin off with him set after the events of the movie (Will never happen). Also Angela Basset and Allen Payne are really good. This cast is for me the positive strength of the movie. Other than that I have no strong opinions. Overall I can repeat that it is not a good movie but I enjoyed it. Would not recommend it except for the “So bad it is good” movie night with friends.

Vampire in Brooklyn is neither funny nor frightening and comes up a tedious middle-road hybrid from veteran scaremeister Wes Craven, who directed.

Austin Chronicle
Neither all that scary nor all that hilarious, Vampire in Brooklyn falls directly between the two, into the valley of mediocrity.

For years I've criticized Murphy for not working with the best directors or powerful female co-stars. But he does that here, and his movie is still a clunker. Relatives are listed in the credits; maybe he needs to stop trying to completely control the films he makes. Either that or it's time for another stand-up concert film. [27 Oct 1995, p.B]

There isn't a moment of genuine suspense or tension in the film, and the paltry laughs are supplied not by Murphy but by Hardison, whose character, a lowlife Brooklyn habitue forcefully turned into the vampire's bug-eating sidekick, spends the entire movie moaning about his decomposing body and embarrassing the boss with his earthy patter. Like so many Eddie Murphy misfires, Vampire in Brooklyn has no idea how to capitalize on the actor's immense appeal. The film was directed by the horror master Wes Craven and it turns out to be an Eddie Murphy-Wes Craven movie that is not funny or scary. Now that's a nightmare.

I found this movie really funny. It's so cheezy that it's charming. This is perhaps the last movie I can remember Eddie Murphy being funny (aside from the Shrek movies.) Vampire in Brooklyn does not work as a horror at all. It tries to, but it doesn't. As a comedy on the other hand it really is fun, put a nice new perspective on an over done genre. Kind of in the spirit of Blacula, just better. Overall: Vampire in Brooklyn is a an enjoyable movie if you don't take it seriously and are willing to ignore the mountain of mistakes it makes, they are minor and if taken in good humor also easy to ignore. Just don't expect a horror from this movie.
