Film Threat
In a world where there is no shortage of cop thrillers, The Rip is sheer popcorn entertainment from start to finish.

A corrupt-cop drama that is mostly aware about its B-minus-movie aspirations, Carnahan’s film is a thoroughly enjoyable if not particularly original mashup of Training Day, Cop Land, Triple 9 and a dozen-plus other films in which it is up to One Good Cop™ to solve a mystery involving a dead police captain, dirty officials and millions of dollars in drug-cartel money.

My first review on Metacritic and the reason for it is I think the user reviews here (and other places) have become way too wacky and politicized. When people find a film that was shot during the night to be too dark and people under extreme pressure and working condition saying a curse word "bad" I need ask myself what is really going on? I honestly think people didn't like how the film forces us to really think about our own preconceptions to do with bad guys, greed, crime, etc. And I think people didn't enjoy the direction the movie went, however well it was done. Is this movie a 10? Hell nah, but it was pretty enjoyable for the action scenes, the unique storyline, high production value, and chemistry between the actors. The back and forth dialogue between Matt and Damon was solid and entertaining. People complaining about the use of 'F' bombs, the metacritic morality police, please just shut the F up. I give the film a solid 8. I watched it all the way through and it filled my action-who-dun-it craving quite deliciously.

The film's legible direction and steady escalation of tension makes for an enjoyably retro diversion.

All in all, it’s quite a ride, yet the more things it tries to do, the less well it does them.

Part Heat, part Miami Vice, this sinewy thriller keeps motives hidden as a police unit weighs duty against dirty money.

As a B-movie with a couple of A-listers, “The Rip” will probably go down as a minor and flawed genre exercise. But even in their lesser efforts, the sincerity of Damon and Affleck’s buddy routine remains winning.

Affleck and Damon, at least, try to pump a little crotchety humanity into their characters. But any hope of suspense, any genuine mystery over who (if anyone) is on the path of betrayal, is swiftly dashed by how poorly defined these suspects are.

Really good film, zero ideology. The type of entertainment that's missing nowadays.

I was expecting better. Joe Carnahan delivers an average B-movie with a solid plot, but Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s performances do not raise the stakes to a higher level. Much of the narrative feels predictable, and the few twists are unfortunately too good to be true. Decent, but far from great.

The Rip has a solid first two acts. The way the tension and suspense build is incredibly ****’s lying? Who’s trying to get the money? Who’s the traitor?Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are one of the best duos in movies, and they’re an absolute joy to watch here as well.Unfortunately, what brings the movie down are the underwhelming action set pieces and the disappointing final act. The action scenes are hard to follow due to lame shaky cam and overly dark visuals. The final act also devolves into generic Netflix action slop.Overall, it’s an enjoyable time, and I was at least never bored.

The cops I know shoot themselves in the leg or hide behind buldings while an active school shooter executes 30 kids. The other ones make illegal stops and murder black people. As for the RIP the show is very dumb... Desi is hidding something, but lets the cops in anyway? The attic hatch has dirt and dust from 50 years, but the attic is spotless? This goes on and on.... you can always tell the quality of a movie by the amount of a fbombs, and this has truck load.
