The original manga established all of these action-fantasy tropes, to be sure, but “The Ribbon Hero” refuses to even highlight what few elements made the Princess Knight so unique in the first place. Instead, it just feels like a pale, frustrating imitator of the magical-girl stories it would go on to inspire.

This very loose reworking is an anticlimax: conservative in solely concentrating on the girlishly feminine side of its protagonist, Sapphire (voiced by Saya), where the gender-flipping original was heralded by many as pioneering; and bland in its vanilla characterisation and dull adherence to battle-anime norms.

It’s pretentious and uninspired, a collection of tropes and confusing cosmology with no compelling characters or memorable fights. If you’re curious about Tezuka’s work, you’d be far better off skipping this adaptation and just watching some of the many anime he inspired like Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, or Magic Knight Rayearth.
