The A.V. Club
It's more haunting than it has any right to be, thanks to its love of long, lonesome highways and the way the violence of the past bleeds into the present.

TV Guide Magazine
London-born director Asif Kapadia's second feature, following 2001's critically acclaimed "The Warrior," is a slow, low-key supernatural thriller whose story is too slender to justify its feature-length running time.

The first part of this movie is moody and sparse on dialogue. Very little seems to be happy but I didn't care too much as it looked fantastic. The colours look subdued and gorgeous. The camera moves and shot choices are all stunning. The problem is that there isn't any story and not a lot of atmosphere. One bit made me jump but for the rest of the time I was unmoved. If you are looking for a similar outing to The Grudge (2004), like I was, then you will be a bit disappointed. Beautiful cinematography and palate cannot totally excuse a lack of content.

A large step backwards for a promising director and far from the return we'd been hoping for.

The Hollywood Reporter
While Adam Sussman's screenplay can be admired for its emphasis on subtle atmospherics rather than cheap scares, it is a gimmicky slog of an affair that lacks narrative coherence or strong focus.

The Globe and Mail (Toronto)
Sarah Michelle Gellar is not faring well as a horror-movie scream queen. Gone are the attitude, wit and verve she used to routinely display in the title role of TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Chicago Reader
A soporific ghost story.

At the heart of The Return is a murder that even the most bumbling homicide investigator could have solved in about 12 seconds.

The Return is aimless, muddled and honestly lacking of any kind of scare or suspense. On top of that, the twist is too hard to grasp, not to mention uninspired and it regrettably features one of the most demented and forgettable performances by horror queen Gellar. Youâ

Ugly horror film, not scary and with a stupidly and unnecessarily intricate plot where you get lost because probably not even the writers knew where to go. The film is not entertaining and bored and fails to give anything that one should finish it for.
