The action, which also includes a hairy helicopter landing, is the movie’s best feature. It stands to reason, since the director is longtime stunt coordinator and performer Mark Vanselow, making his feature debut.

The Mongoose is nothing if not propulsive, its 98 minutes enlivened by numerous well-staged car chases and some great stunt sequences.

A big dumb movie with a big soft heart, The Mongoose serves warmed-over popcorn slathered in a butter of brothers-in-arms sentiment. The film ought to be a snooze; yet its cast is so practiced — by this point, Liam Neeson has played so many lawmen and military types he must qualify for a service pension — and its action beats so fondly familiar, that you can’t help rooting for its star anyway.

In a film that shamelessly co-opts supporting the troops to generate pathos and includes such shortcuts as Ryan asking the car's AI assistant to "make the car's phone untraceable," there's not much chance of taking anything seriously anyway. Add to this an aesthetic approach that at one point had me genuinely questioning whether Neeson and Tomei were ever in the same room, and you get something that, thankfully, invites laughter. I'm not willing to go as far as giving The Mongoose credit for that – to do so, in fact, would open it up to much sharper criticism over its depiction of veterans – nor can I in good conscience declare this "so bad, it's good." But it is kinda fun. I've seen better movies this year that I won't think of as fondly, and that should count for something.

Good Driving, Predictable Story, and A Step Up from the Ice Road I found The Mongoose watchable, and certainly better than some of the harsher reviews would suggest. That said, it is hardly a great movie, and I have seen Liam Neeson do much better. It is, however, a step up from some of his recent Ice Road outings. The best parts are undoubtedly the driving sequences and the stunts, particularly the helicopter lift towards the end. I also liked the camaraderie between the former soldiers, which gives the film a little more heart than the standard chase thriller. It was good to see Marisa Tomei and Ving Rhames involved, even if their roles are limited to a few key scenes. The problems are fairly obvious. The film drags in places, the plot is predictable, and the antagonist never really makes much of an impression beyond slapstick. There is enough action to keep things moving, but not enough substance to make it particularly memorable. 6/10: A decent one-time watch, but not among Neeson's better action films.
