In this wonderfully strange, hypnotically beautiful second feature from writer-director Claudia Llosa, the traumatic experience of the 1980s civil war on Peruvian women is passed down through song and, it is said, through their mothers' milk.
80
At first, the picture seems a slow-moving, particularly well-framed ethnographic study of life in the big city in Peru; it only gradually becomes clear that Llosa's second feature perfectly aligns form and content.
80
The film is gorgeously shot and contains a plethora of haunting images.

Magaly Solier is compelling as the teen. She has little to say, as the camera remains fixated on her expressionless face.
75
The Milk Of Sorrow is lousy with allegory, and is often too heavy for its own good.
60
The transformation that you anticipate never comes; the movie feels strangled.
50
The Milk of Sorrow is constrained by a rarefied screenplay and a near-mute central performance.

"The Milk of Sorrow" is a film with a beautiful story of overcoming. With a historical trauma in the minds of some Peruvian towns. Magaly Solier is an actress who captivates with her nonverbal communication. Claudia Llosa looks positively Peruvian indigenous history (which in "Madeinusa" isn't it). "The Milk of Sorrow" had to have won the Academy Award. Llosa's magic realism is reminds me of great novels of her uncle, Mario Vargas Llosa.

A beautiful film tainted with Magic Realism, portrays a not-so-fictional Peruvian family. The Quechua singing by the lead character is magnificent, it sets the tone for the picture. The native beauty of the characters faces and everyday reality is not only believable but visually enticing.
