While relying on some historical information, its inherent sweetness is the main reason for its success.

Despite its heavy-duty subject matter, the film co-directed by Capobianco and Pierre-Luc Granjon is filled with welcome humor of both the visual and verbal varieties.

This is my favorite animated film of the year thus far — in part because it honors the two oldest hand-crafted forms of animation; it dares to educate adults and children alike just a bit while it also entertains; and finally, because it shows everyone that greatness isn’t dependent on a massive budget. This simple but beautiful film was made for less than $10 million. It benefits with all the hard work and heart that made its way to the screen. It took more than 10 years to raise the money — including $100,000 on Kickstarter — and two more years in production to actually get the movie into theaters. The story focuses on the last three years of Leonardo’s life (Stephen Fry) as he liost his patron and stopped working for the Pope in Italy (a bombastically funny Max Berry) and joins the court of young King Francis the first (Gauthier Battoue),, who wants da Vinci to elevate his position among the fraternity of kings. Francis tasks the aging but still inquisitive genius to plan a gala, design some weapons and create a statue to impress his battling peers.
.
Instead, Leonardo proposes the construction of an “ideal city,” which appeals to Francis’ sister, Marguerite (Daisy Ridley). She’s a strong, fascinating princess based on a real person. She’s not seeking true love and rescue in some fairytale. Marguerite is also intrigued by da Vinci’s efforts an an anatomist to find physical proof of the immortal human soul. The great thinker’s revelation toward the end of the film is fascinating .— and quite satisfying. This little underdog deserves consideration for an Academy Award nomination as Best Animated Feature. Stop bemoaning the death of hand-drawn animation and support it by seeing it beautifully blended here with stop-motion puppetry in “The Inventor.” As Jim Capobianco said: “… In 10, 20 or 30 years time, we hope that stop-motion animation and 2D hand-drawn animation is still being made for audiences all over the world. We hope to inspire the next generation of animators and Leonardos of the 21st century. To empower people of all ages to see themselves as the innovators of tomorrow as well as today.”

There's an undeniable boldness to Capobianco's decision to channel a biography through the medium of stop motion, but it's perfect for the untrammeled exuberance and boundless ingenuity of Da Vinci.

It’s charming in its own modest way (it ain’t Laika), but the simplistic character design is made up for with energy and creativity. Whether all the cadavers, complex inventions, existential musings, themes of progress and censorship, and politics will alienate the wee ones remains to be seen – but, again, at least it’s not pandering. The Inventor is charming and modest but also honest and true – a rarity these days. Hurry up and check it out before Gen Z cancels Leonardo for being a misogynist.

Despite its protagonist, voiced by British actor Stephen Fry, the film feels oddly disjointed, as if there’s not enough story to sustain 90 minutes of beautifully-made stop-motion and hand-drawn animation.

The Inventor falls awkwardly between a kids’ movie and one for grown-ups.

The Inventor is rife with somewhat didactic lessons — about power, innovation, curiosity — yet a presumably unintended one might be that lessons themselves, however insightful, are not always captivating.

A movie that exists (again) I went into this with extremely high hopes judging by the incredible animation. Unfortunately I was disappointed. 2023 has genuinely been the worst year for animated movies, with the only good one (that I've seen so far) being the mario movie. considering we had Puss in boots 2, bad guys, and sonic 2 last year. Let's hope wish will be just as good as I hope it will be. Positives of the movie include: decent soundtrack, definitely the best looking animation I've seen this year, and bothering to try something new instead of making a sequel to a movie that did not need one (spiderverse 2) or remaking an old movie that was already good (little mermaid). Watch it if it seems of interest to you. I am definitely in the minority here. TLDR: lame movie with good animation and cheesy ending.
