Super-slick street-racing pic, based on a Nipponese manga series and set in Japan, is aimed squarely at the East Asian market, which it has conquered in spades since late June release.

Another oil-slick ode to man-on-auto lust, Initial D offers enough full-speed money shots to eke out a victory over its barrage of clichés.

I watched the Initial D, anime [both the tokyopop and funimation editions, subbed and dubbed all formats.], and read the manga, so I have some prior exposure to this series, there are some gripes I had with this movie, a lot of the manga is glossed over quite rapidly and certain events and actions in the movie never take place in the manga/anime etc but I won't get geeky about it...however as a movie adaption from manga/anime goes it's a lot better then many other manga to movie transitions, so I can give it this, Initial D is a great anime adapted to movie, I honetly think it's a better drifting movie then The fast and the furious tokyodrift aka fast and the furious 3, it has a better story and the main character is not your average main character, and I appreciate how the director and cast looked closely at the manga and anime for inspiration, this is as close a movie adaption from an anime/manga a director has come to getting it spot on [with the exception of maybe deathnote that too has a good movie adaption as well] ultimately the movie has a good story the charcters are well chosen for their roles the english dub is pretty good for the time as well, honestly a great series I enjoyed the movie and want to see an Initial D sequel movie [which has been rumored to be in the works.] jay chu did a good job playing takumi fujiwara this series is iconic and the movie was entertaining.

What a **** movie is this? I stop watching at the first race becasue Nakazato is drifting. Like Nakazato don't drift everybody knows that, he hates drifting. He was drifting when he had Silvia, but in this movie he drifts with R32 Skyline. And Itsuki have S13, he should had Hachi-Go Levin. And there's no Keisuke or his RX7, Ryosuke is there but Keisuke is not even in the movie, i check the cast. I wasted my time. The only good thing is cars. Shiny beatiful Japanese cars. But the rest of it is waste of time.

As a matter of fact, Initial D is an anti-car racing film. It's not about thrills; it's about how to perfect the art of drifting, philosophy, and how to transcend the human condition.

A slick but silly affair unlikely to appeal to anyone over the age of 15.

Slick though featherweight adolescent melodrama.

Andy Lau and Siu Fai Mak, the men behind the successful Hong Kong police thriller trio "Infernal Affairs," should be arrested for directing Initial D.

This Chinese adaptation of the Japanese manga/anime trashes the source material with feeble kiddie humor, buffoonish characters, and the sort of senseless plotting you'd find in Chinese cinema 40-50 years ago. Watch the animated OVA series of films instead.
