The rather modest 1813 Johann Wyss tale has been blown up to prodigious proportions. The essence and the spirit of the simple, intriguing story of a marvelously industrious family is all but snuffed out, only spasmodically flickering through the ponderous approach.

A classical family friendly adventure movie I enjoyed as kid. Recently I discovered it is based on an old novel “The Swiss Family Robinson” from 1812 by author Johann David Wyss. Because neither I or anyone I knew read it I cant say if it is a faithful adaptation. It is an adventure like the title says. A Swiss family consisting of father, mother and their 3 children wants to escape by ship the Napoleonic wars that torn Europe apart. However their ship is attacked by pirates and their escape leads them into a storm. They are stranded on an uninhabited island and have to survive. It is an enjoyable adventure story in classic Disney style. I enjoyed it from start to finish. It might not be reinventing the wheel but is satisfying and entertaining. The struggle for survival and family dynamic are a great combination. The actors work well even if I am unfamiliar with the names at it was far before my birth. However it was more than convincing and I praise the whole cast for the performance. The visuals were impressing for me as child but like any movie from that era it looks a bit outdated but cant be hold against the movie. Overall this was a great movie back then and I feel nostalgia. It is a family friendly adventure and was a success. I give an 8/10 and recommend it for fans of older movies.
