That is why, as over-the-top and broad as it sometimes is, Summer of 85 is also one of Ozon’s most moving films to date.

A sumptuously shot, nostalgic bildungsroman framed by a bitttersweet darkness, the film deploys many well-worn tropes of the coming of age drama. But they’re executed with such a light, self-aware confidence that Summer of ’85 has wit, warmth and charm to spare.

Summer of 85 Beautiful scenery, solid plot even though the alternation between past and present dulls the climax. Young love, romance and tragedy portrayed with sheer sincerity by the wonderful cast. The soundtrack is also noteworthy and helps bolster the emotions of the scenes especially Rod Stewart's _Sailing_.

Sundrenched yet dark, Summer of 85 is a gorgeously shot French film with a great retro soundtrack (notably featuring The Cure’s “In Between Days”). Aside from its technical brilliance, it’s a moving, well-acted **** story. Highly recommend this excellent selection from Cannes!

Here, the story and the characters' supposed naiveté and the almost-too-obvious stylistic flourishes aren't just nods to his younger, less-refined m.o. They are actually part of a master storyteller's tools to seduce a grown-up audience into considering how youngsters not only experience their own lives but also how they process and talk about them.

Summer of 85 delights in romantic excess, ending up as an almost literal evocation of one of the songs on its era-specific soundtrack.

Still, despite some distracting contrivances, Summer of 85 transports viewers to a place, time and feeling that feel altogether real, and not nearly as far away as they initially might seem.

The movie has dug a hole for itself with the disingenuous framing device, and the last act feels like a cheat, revealing Alex’s “crime” to be anything but. While the midsection of the film proves to be the most charming — a kind of extended montage in which the young men tentatively test the limits of their relationship — it’s the final stretch that situates Summer of 85 squarely within Ozon’s oeuvre.

Summer of 85 plays like a bad parody of movies like Love Story and Summer of ’42, stories where some undeserving male learns a valuable lesson from a love affair and death.

Beautiful cinematography! Amazing performances! And the somehow generic love story develops into something quite touching.

This deeply offends me with how formulaic and unoriginal it is. Probably made by someone completely out of touch with life/entertainment today. It's just another tragic same sex romance movie, nothing entertaining. Gets a star or two for decent acting, but that's about it. Skip it.
