Bergman can't bring individual scenes together into a collective whole, and the ending (which was reshot at the last minute) closes things on a disappointingly limp note. [28 Jun 1996, p.5G]

Director/writer Andrew Bergman has a proven flair for screwball humor, and you can still discern traces of the lighthanded romp Striptease might have been if Moore hadn't reshaped the project to accommodate the formidable dimensions of her ego.

Yes, Burt Reynolds has some dirty, lively moments as a crooked, sex-starved Congressman. But the crazy, nothing-to-lose anarchy of people living below the margin and beyond the fringe is not within Bergman's fastidious reach.

Striptease lets down its own performers right along with the audience. It’s a Christmas tree someone forgot to string with ornaments.

Let's hope Bergman leaves the rest of Hiaasen's books alone.

In the wake of the debacle known as Showgirls, Striptease has had to fight to establish its separate identity and credentials. In retrospect, it appears to have been wasted energy.
25
Tired ethnic stereotyping abounds in the Striptease script, which is at a loss for any kind of drama between Moore's dances. Not for a second do we care about her as a mother, wife or working woman. Only her first dance in a modified man's suit approaches the energy of the much better Flashdance.

Striptease is a 1996 erotic/drama/comedy/thriller... The nudity is awesome but the problem with this film is not the women dancing whilst stripping because that's the best parts of the movie. The problem is it's a comedy that tries to be funny and fails, Ving Rhames also ruins the film due to his annoying, big macho image performance. Robert Patrick's performance was annoying as hell and the only performance I liked was Demi Moore's acting ability so not the best film but I gave it a 6 rating only because of the beautiful Demi Moore. Demi Moore getting naked and the women stripping to me is the only real reason to watch this movie and is the only real highlight in the film and Burt Reynolds comes off as unfunny and a desperate pervert of a congressman but still fairly decent only because of the nudity and Demi Moore. The rest is stupid.

Completely unfunny and mostly unsexy as well, Burt Reynolds performance as the over-the-top corrupt, incompetent Congressman is the one real highlight. Everything else, just forget it.
