SOULM8TE

Although it packs in plenty of sex, bloodshed and a cautionary lesson about the risks of enhanced vaginal grip, this android Fatal Attraction is seldom as much fun as it should be.

While Dolan obviously wants to pay homage to a specific era of film, her development of tension and discomfort never matches the R-rated payoff.

Dolan and her collaborators do a good job smoothing over the presentation of a fairly janky, formulaic concept, to results that are entertaining enough. But all concerned deserve better material to work with, and Soulm8te does not raise expectations that the “M3GAN” universe will aim any higher than competent but disposable genre fodder.

There’s potential for commentary here on the way women hold each other accountable for men’s behavior, but “SOULM8TE” makes the classic mistake of indulging in the same tropes it thinks it’s critiquing.
