Song of the South's cartoon sequences are as fine as anything produced by the Disney animators.

Song of the South is essentially a nostalgic valentine to a past that never existed, and within those limits, it offers a pleasant, family diversion for holiday afternoons when the children get restless.

SO badly misconstrued for being about slavery. Its specifically set during reconstruction, the sharecropper days. The ones who should be most offended by this movie are the Irish. The little girl is clearly 2nd gen Irish immigrant who were treated just as poorly as the former slaves, yet this issue is never brought up, as Disney was trying to ease racial tension with this film. Everything is a product of its time/

This rather mushy combination of animation and live-action remains one of Disney's most controversial efforts.

Where Song of the South errs badly is in its regurgitation of the horrible myth that black slaves were always singing and happy and just loved working on massah’s plantation.

The stories are pretty good folk, though a little too coyly calculated. But the plantation stuff is beneath contempt. Better save this for nostalgia only—kids won't be missing anything if they never encounter this relic.

Apparently the Disney wonder-workers are just a lot of conventional hacks when it comes to telling a story with actors instead of cartoons.

This film about a former slave now dedicated to storytelling is not one of the Disney house's greatest achievements, although the best moments are courtesy of some anthropomorphic animals. The main reason to watch this movie is to understand why Uncle Walt considered it taboo and hid it behind a wall. If you have a chance to see it, do so.

No. ****. Great theme song. Very catchy tune, even The Jackson 5 covered it. I just have a problem with movies especially from that era that depicts one group of people as subordinates to another. Humanity, we are better than this!!
