Reworked from Yeon’s comic of the same name (co-written by Choi Gyu-seok), “Revelations” is the kind of layered yet messy adaptation that results from someone trying to find new ways of telling a story they’ve almost thought to death already.

When “Revelations” isn’t investigating signs, it’s a dry, psychologically driven ghost story.

The Duality of Imagination: A Blessing and a Curse That Consumes the Soul251009 (2.7)Is the ability to imagine and believe a blessing or a curse? This film poses a profound question as it explores how individuals—whether they are defined as villains, heroes, or those caught in the gray areas in between—eventually become buried under the weight of their own subjective imaginings. Each character is consumed by their internal world, struggling to distinguish reality from the constructs of their own minds. This psychological immersion creates a haunting atmosphere where perception becomes a cage. I was particularly moved by the character Yeon-hui, who manages to endure and eventually overcome this suffocating cycle of imagination. Shin Hyun-been’s performance was truly exceptional, capturing the delicate nuances of strength and vulnerability required to bring such a complex role to life. Her portrayal adds a layer of grounded reality to a narrative that often teeters on the edge of the surreal. Watching her navigate the labyrinth of her own mind to emerge victorious on the other side was the highlight of the film. It serves as a reminder that while our imagination can be a source of great pain and delusion, it is also the very tool we use to rebuild ourselves. The film leaves a lasting impression, urging the audience to reflect on the boundaries of their own beliefs and the power of the mental worlds they inhabit.

A strong cast, director and cinematographer could not elevate this ho-hum tale about three damaged individuals who collide over the disappearance of a young girl.

'Revelations' is a Korean thriller produced by Alfonso Cuarón that addresses religious fanaticism through the existential crisis of a pastor and a mysterious crime. The director of 'Train to Busan' offers an interesting look at how Catholicism is experienced in a predominantly atheist country like South Korea; however, he also tries to incorporate many subplots surrounding guilt, marital conflicts, and the psychological undertones of abusers, resulting in a hodgepodge of unclear and mostly expository ideas. Despite some good performances and certain Fincher-esque aspirations, the film falls flat.
