The Guardian
Writer-director Emerald Fennell (a showrunner for TV’s Killing Eve) lands a stiletto jab with her feature debut, and Carey Mulligan is demurely brilliant as the appropriately named Cassandra.

The tone shifts radically from one moment to the next, and humor is a regular companion to mayhem, pain, even violence. That brings us to the wild and harrowing ending. It’s an ending that may not be expected — well, it’s definitely not expected — but Fennell has said it was the truest way to end a real story of female revenge, not a comic-book version.

Sharp, clever, and often a step ahead of everyone. The climax is moments of high tension, and we are left on the edge of our seats, watching the situation unfold, with such uneasiness.

The most original of the year with an excellent directing of Emerald Fennell, the way that she directed to Carey Mulligan is amazing, every single aspect of this performance is genuine.

Promising Young Woman is a dark tale of revenge, shot through with black comedy. At every turn, it’s almost too much. As is the performance by Carey Mulligan. Except that performance turns out to be just right. It’s a no-holds-barred wonder, easily one of the best of the year.

The film’s empowerment fantasy of a woman who steamrolls male egos is as stylish and fun as its portrait of gender relations is dire.

Promising Young Woman is not always surefooted in its style or substance, but Mulligan is consistently riveting throughout.

Time Out
After spending the whole movie subverting expectations, it feels like Promising Young Woman tries to have it both ways with a ‘satisfying’ twist, and leaves the audience adrift.

The narrative is telegraphic rather than dramatic, with story points ticked off like bullet points, and the actors (excluding Ms. Mulligan, once again) act mainly for the camera, as if they aren’t sure their leaden emphasis is weighty enough. The intended tone is darkly comic, but the supporting cast isn’t sufficiently skillful to sustain it.

Haunted by an event in her past, Cassie (Carey Mulligan) seeks revenge on those who crossed her path. Cassie was on her way to becoming a successful doctor when a tragic event in her past completely derailed her future. Cassie now lives a secret double life, venturing out at night to a bar or nightclub pretending to be so drunk she can barely stand. While in her apparent vulnerable state she is on the prowl for potential predators who can't resist the temptation to "help" Cassie in her incredibly intoxicated condition, but after an unexpected encounter she now has a chance for revenge. Emerald Fennell's directorial debut and she really has given us a film that packs a huge emotional impact and leaves a long lasting impression. A brilliant screenplay with stunning visuals, I can't wait to see what Fennell does next. Promising Young Woman is definitely one you'll be thinking about long after the credits have ended. From the opening scene you're immediately plunged into a constant state of unease. There's a growing sense of impending disaster building the entire time. The film itself is tackling a lot of sensitive topics but handles it very well. Swiftly moving from darkly comedic to uncomfortable to watch at times. It's shocking, and sure to provoke some strong emotions from everyone. Not only is film an expertly told revenge story but Carey Mulligan's performance is truly stunning. This part was made for her and she completely disappears into the character of Cassandra. A terrifyingly tense revenge thriller that everyone should see. Many of you have probably already seen Promising Young Woman and if you haven't it's highly recommended.

This movie has an interesting premise and everyone is giving a great effort, but unfortunately it's ultimately a childish treatment of the subject matter instead of the edgy, mad circus it promises. There is an attractive style to it, but disappointingly little substance

The trailer was more captivating to watch than the actual movie. I thought there would be more gore and thriller entertainment. The main character build was confusing and never made sense in the end.... I will never watch this again, I can not understand how this got a 91% rating on rotten?

Promising Young Woman not only adds to the Femme Fatale, it also fails it. Cassie, whom we grow to appreciate for in her dominating yet sometimes vulnerable moments, dies predictably for almost nothing. Was it really worth the lives of her and Nina, two aspirational, intelligent women, to prosecute just one rapist? The accomplices, of which there were multiple; where are they now? The film, despite its try at redeeming its feminist, liberal overtones, leaves this question unprovoked, and honestly, unbothered. If anything, allowing women so much power only to have them fall perpetuates the criticism around men always needing the last word before one of them, dies, which is rarely ever 'him'.
