It’s movies like these that prove that cinema still has the capacity to surprise, even in criminally goofy comedies like this.

More than anything, NTBTSTM is simply hilarious – a furiously funny roller coaster of a film whose energy never, ever dips. It is difficult to imagine a better, sharper comedy coming along this year. Or the next.

Before money and fame, friendship is the greatest treasure. Luckily, this movie is so good that the duo might get the money and the fame too.

It took me a few minutes to figure out what this movie was all about and get a feel for what it was trying to convey, so it needs you to wait it out for a bit in order to figure out where its going, but it's definitely worth staying in your seat. The payoff is fantastic. Finally I'm watching a comedy in the theater and one that makes me feel good too. After watching this movie, I just wanted to call up my best friend from high school and see him again. Everybody should see this movie. This is exactly the comedy break I needed at the cinema.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is not only the funniest movie I’ve seen at SXSW, it’s one of the funniest I’ve seen in years.

Johnson is nothing if not a punchy ringmaster of deadpan humor and his grab-bag mindset generates enough goodwill to appreciate the DIY brashness of it all. I’m one of those who had no clue of this act’s history and I’m fairly certain I’d look forward to Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie the Sequel.

Making dumb seem clever, and clever seem silly, Matt Johnson and company take their mockumentary shtick to new and dizzying heights, literally.

Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie is so affable, so good-natured, so modest—just so gosh-darned charming—that it’s difficult not to crack at least a little bit of a smile while watching it.

This overly meta farce beats its mildly silly jokes so steadily into the ground that it’s not so much a case of diminishing returns as humor abuse.

A movie that asks the real questions, like what's success without friends/loved ones to share it with and where did all the goth kids go?

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is difficult to describe and all the better for it. The film seamlessly blends together hidden-camera crowd work, archival footage, scripted scenes, and even high-stakes stunts. Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol bring their script to life with such enthusiastic energy that any crowd should be captivated from start to finish. Hearing a full house gradually key in on a joke is so much fun, and is something Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie continuously sets up so well. Whether it's riffing off changes in socially acceptable language or going full send with Chekhov's Gun, the film knows how to deliver a punchline. Find a packed room or theater, grab some popcorn, and kick back and listen as Nirvanna brings the house down.

"Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie" combines slyly skillful filmmaking with gut-busting laughs and will be pure heaven for fans of the series while making happy converts of the uninitiated.

First off, this movie has nothing to do with the original Nirvana led by Kurt Cobain, but is based on a Canadian TV series of the same name (with 2 “n”s). Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol play aspiring performers who are desperate to get a gig at the Rialto, although we never hear them sing a song. Their efforts end up with them travelling back to 2008 and some other preposterous episodes. It was also shot guerilla style on the streets of Toronto, including some nerve-racking footage on the exterior ledge of the CN tower without permits. Their style of comedy is goofy, unexpected, brash and energetic (there’s lots of running down the street). Even so, I never found it funny, although the young audience around me seemed entertained. This duo has created a unique project that’s feels like an extended comedy sketch from two desperate wannabes.
