Marry Me

Yes, the script might as well have been written by an algorithm to hit every rom-com beat, from the meet-cute to the magical connection to the setback to the happy ending, but it deserves extra credit for what it avoids. There are no silly misunderstandings, contrived situations, or cartoonishly awful people.

Those hoping the film might push the genre to its most extravagant limits may be surprised at how (relatively) low-key their love story ends up being. But sometimes that’s the most pleasurable kind of fairy tale — one so close to convincing, you can forget for a spell that it’s all just a dream.

Marry Me hangs on Lopez who is as glowing and glamorous as ever. Lopez, as they say, understood the assignment.

It’s a fun premise, one that this treats seriously, but it never quite reaches the highest levels of the genre.

The fact that Marry Me contains anything so formulaic as a third-act separation montage should spell out clearly what you’re getting in for.

Even with a handful of toe-tapping songs written by Maluma and JLo specifically for the film Marry Me is an off-tune rom-com that should make most viewers think twice about saying “I do.”

Marry Me plays out as the logical culmination of a multi-hyphenate icon’s indiscriminate commercial voracity.

Ps: there are those who have seen in it a conflict between reason and feeling (mathematics and programmed life vs. instinct and intuition). Let's not exaggerate.

Jennifer Lopez plays a fictional version of herself, a music superstar. She's slated to wed her famous beau (Maluma), but when she finds him cheating right before the wedding, she randomly picks someone out of the audience to take his place (Owen Wilson). Since he's a scruffy math teacher, their lifestyles obviously clash. The story goes where it's expected, so it's up to the writing and performances to make it special. Lopez looks fabulous in great fashions, while taking her role seriously. Wilson serves up his usual hapless charm, which works for his character, but it's Sarah Silverman, as his guidance counselor friend, who brings the funny. It's obvious by the constant original musical numbers that a soundtrack is the movie's side hustle. As for the writing, there's nothing new or especially amusing. Overall, the chemistry between the couple is genuine and their performances elevate the film slightly out of run-of-the-mill romcom.
