Mack & Rita is silly, but it’s a strong, necessary kind of silly, a warm and embracing kind of silly. Keaton has rarely been so bubbling and bright, reminding us that regardless of age, being true to yourself is all that really counts in a person. The love will come no matter what.

Directed with some unexpected beats by Katie Aselton, the comedy captures a bit of the esprit de girlfriends of HBO’s “Insecure,” but borrows too giddily from the Nancy Meyers rom-com catalog of upscale homes.

The film does, at minimum, convince us that most people would want to transform into Keaton if given the opportunity.

Visually, fusing the story with a warm, contemporary aesthetic makes it a pleasant enough affair. But ultimately, Mack & Rita is a passable work at best for Aselton (Black Rock and The Freebie serve as better showcases for her creative voice), and consequently, it’s unlikely to lead to her soon swapping chairs with the director of the next big-budget blockbuster.

The film misses an opportunity to portray the complexity of one’s 30s — and 70s. Still, Mack & Rita is a quirky movie that reminds the audience to live life to the fullest, whatever age they are.

Maybe if “Rita” had been forced into more bachelorette weekend antics with Paige, bubbly Aimee Carrero and Addie Weyrich, the strain of trying to keep up, comically, with Keaton wouldn’t have been so obvious. As it is, “Mack & Rita” is a criminal waste of seasoned comic talent and a criminal misuse of some of the most beautiful Hollywood starlets coming up behind them.

Virtually no one associated with this film should be congratulated in any way, having ruptured any bridges between Hollywood and senior citizens or for the shocking misuse of Diane Keaton’s considerable skills.

This is an absolute stinker of a movie. Diane Keaton does her usual schtick - flailing arms, high pitched voice, hands over her face. You’ve seen it all a million times. And wearing the same clothes she always wears: schlumpy sweaters, scarf around her neck, clunky shoes, you’ve seen all that before too. The story is a cliche - a young woman turns into an old woman, not by a gypsy per se, but a man in a traveling tent with an old tanning bed. The acting by most everyone is atrocious. A 40-year-old neighbor of the 30-year-old, now 70, falls in love with the 70-year-old. It’s torture to sit through all this. I say, save your money! Don’t even spend it to stream this dreck. Bright spots are Wendie Malick and Loretta Devine.

Pretty bland, pretty boring. At least Keaton had fun and Taylour Paige got paid.
