The title character in the new horror film titled Leprechaun is supposed to be fiendish but, though the movie's body count is respectable, he seems to be no more than dangerously cranky. That may be because the setting is rural North Dakota, which doesn't suit leprechauns, or because the screenplay and direction are amateurish, which doesn't suit films of any kind. [09 Jan 1993, p.17]

This dingy, drab, pointless little movie -- a would-be shamrock shocker about four teen-agers menaced by the Irish super-scamp while renovating a North Dakota farmhouse -- is made without flair or imagination, seemingly enervated by its own bad taste and low intentions. [11 Jan 1993, p.F3]

Leprechaun (1993) is such a fun, entertaining, and scary ride with good characters, pretty good performances, gross and OUTSTANDING effects, especially on the Leprechaun, great and energetic camera work, lore, good cast, and an OUTSTANDING performance by Warwick Davis, as the series' main monster!!I'm not going to leave out how it's one of Jennifer Aniston's early roles, and she's fun in the movie, and the rest of the cast is really entertaining like Ken Olandt (Nathan), Mark Holton (Ozzie), Robert Hy Gorman (Alex), etc.Great location as well, and the movie has so many tiny moments that feel like it takes inspiration from movies like Child's Play, Evil Dead 1&2, A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.Love this movie so much, and I'm so glad I saw it so early on, and continue to come back to it!and **** you Lucky Charms" LOL

This movie is a fun little B Horror movie if you like watching Campy horror movies and still haven't watched this one you should give it a try because it's a fun time

In makeup, Davis is quite evil-looking and, like most good actors facing similar challenges, imbues a weak character with a strong presence. The movie is interesting only when he's wheeling about on screen, but in retrospect this is probably one set of reels Davis wishes he had sat out.

At the risk of confessing a breech of duties, I "watched" much of the film with my eyes closed, isolating the soundtrack only because I could always accurately guess what was happening on the screen . . . which wasn't much, believe me. [20 Mar 1993, p.C6]

The action scenes are poorly staged, the frights predictable, and the generally competent cast appears at a loss to make anything of the substandard material. Gabe Bartalos' makeup for the leprechaun is actually quite good, but his efforts go for naught.

It is legitimately unwatchable.

Bad sets, bad acting, bad direction, shadows of boom-mikes, inexplicable plot holes, generic effects, fake-looking gore, death by pogo stick (!?), off-kilter Irish brogues... I just can't say enough about this, can I? My head hurts just trying to remember this complete and utter waste of perfectly good Kodak film stock.

I remember when first seeing this in theaters and thinking how lame it was. Revisiting it so many years later I still think its lame, i just have grown to enjoy the cheesiness of it. Starring a young and charasmatic Jennifer Aniston (Friends). The film centers on a small group of strangers who get attacked by the title creature and discovering his gold. Things play out with as silly childlike flair as the evil leprechaun played by a wonderful Warwick Davis (Willow) taunts them and does things like polish shoes, rides skateboards and so much more. The kills are creative and fun and the film aims low and mostly succeeds. 3.25/5

This is so deeply flawed, no idea how this got any sequels let alone seven. It is so slow, like they are talking very slowly and leaving lots of gaps so they can fill the runtime. Plus they don’t have anything interesting to say either. There is some trashy b-movie charm but not a classic due to dull writing. Ozzie and Alex are the most entertaining characters, the leprechaun is somewhat entertaining but he should have been funnier. The rest of the cast are dull. Ozzie and the lawnmower man are so similar, they both have lower than average intelligence and wear dungarees. The gore consisted of putting strawberry jam on the victims, well except the eye scene. For all the flaws, I like the music. Jennifer Aniston looks young but it’s not worth watching to see her pre-Friend performance as her character is so dull. There are some funny lines like their reaction to a bell ringing “what’s that?” “It’s a bell” which is so stupid that you can’t help but laugh. Apart from the bad language and the jam this could be a family horror. There are some great tracking shots. There is no sense of urgency or fear. The only reasons to watch are to: see Jennifer Aniston acting badly before she was famous or hear some puerile jokes.
